Description

This five-mile tour makes a loop and includes historic sites and museums in the heart of downtown Independence as well as a few additional landmarks and museums that can be reached within a relatively short walk. The tour starts at one of the oldest homes in the city and moves on to the first courthouse in the region, a building that was constructed in 1827. The tour then makes its way through the center of downtown before moving west to include sites related to President Harry S. Truman. The tour turns south and includes several sites of importance to the history of the LDS church before heading further south and east to the National Frontier Trails Museum. Highlights of the tour include the Truman Presidential Library & Museum the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, and numerous historic markers and buildings associated with the early history of Independence.
