John E. Thomas was born in Albany on November 27, 1929, to parents Henry and Lucy Thomas. Along with attending common schools. Thomas was privately tutored by Herr August Harpprecht, who was a graduate of the Wittenberg University in Germany. After completing his studies, Thomas became a clerk in a large dry-goods and silk house, and also began studying medicine. After two years of studying, he decided he did not want to be a doctor.

In 1849, at the age of 20, Thomas ventured west. He arrived in Chicago, but soon discovered that it was not for him. He continued onward, and arrived in Sheboygan County. There, he started a mercantile business, and 1853 he stablished himself when he began the first chair manufacturing company in the county. This same year, Thomas married Clara Cole, daughter of Nathan and Chloe Cole, and granddaughter of Charles D. Cole. Together, Thomas and Clara had four sons, and two daughters: Stedman Thomas, William, Charles, Harry, Mary, and Mattie.

Thomas was unsatisfied with just the manufacturing business, and decided to pursue a law degree. In 1858 he was admitted to the Wisconsin Bar, and began practicing law in Milwaukee. In 1862, he sold his interest in the chair factory. This led to him setting up his own law practice in Sheboygan Falls in 1865.

In addition to practicing law, Thomas held local political offices, as well as serving in the Wisconsin Assembly in 1862 and the Wisconsin Senate from 1863-1864. He is credited with assisting with the formation of the State Normal School system, and served on the State Board of Regents for six years. These schools would later become the UW schools we know today!

In 1879, Thomas became the owner, editor, and publisher of the Sheboygan County News. His son William and daughter Mattie became managing partners of the paper, while their brother, Harry, served as the book-keeper and collector. With the help of his son, Stedman, Thomas also became a founding member and the president of the Dairymen's Bank in 1881. His son then became the managing resident partner.

The Honorable John E. Thomas died on April 14, 1910. He was so close with the family of Silas Stedman that he was buried alongside them, and the Stedman name lived on through John's son, Stedman Thomas.
