The Remington Nature Center was the brainchild of then Parks Director Bill McKinney. It was a dream that did not come cheaply – it took many contributors to make it a reality. One of the largest of those donors was Wes Remington, a St. Joseph businessman. Remington’s significant support of the project is acknowledged in the name of the nature center. The center opened in November 2008 to rave reviews. Its location is one of its great assets – the huge windows and deck area offer unparalleled views of the river – but also a challenge. The Missouri River floods in 2011 and 2019 both required that the facility be temporarily closed. Its architecture means that the building itself did not flood.

Since its opening, the Remington Nature Center has continued to change and to offer engaging, innovative family-friendly events. The annual Herp-O-Rama offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with amphibians and reptiles. The Remington Nature Center, “where history and nature collide” is a wonderful place to spend several hours.
