The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany
Item 1 of 3

The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany are located at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Founded in 1859, the Franciscan Sisters have been helping out the Allegany community through practicing the ideals of the Franciscan faith. These Franciscan Sisters participate in service work projects and help out not just the Allegany community but throughout the world as well. The Motherhouse in Allegany is the center meeting place where the Sisters meet and live together while practicing community.

The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany have been around practicing the ideals of the Franciscan ways of life. Their vision statements include: live simply in right relationship with God, with others and with creation, commit to continuing conversion, deepen our contemplative stance, proclaim the Reign of God in word and deed, participate in building a global community based on the principles of justice and compassion, be instruments of peace, reconciliation and non-violence in our Congregation, Church and world. Their "mission" statement is, "We, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, seek to live the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We witness to God's love in the Franciscan tradition by living as sisters with all creation and by joyfully serving others, especially those who are poor or marginalized." (The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany Website). These sisters have a concentration on social justice and bringing help to those in need. The Motherhouse is located near St. Bonaventure University that was founded by the Franciscans. There is a tight relationship between the two establishments which can be seen through the similar mission statements.
