A former neighbor to the University campus, Robert Flarsheim left his nearly $9 million estate to the school when he passed away in 1991. The new building was named Flarsheim Hall in his honor, as its construction may not have been possible without his donation. Flarsheim is also memorialized by a bust elsewhere on campus.

This building, a $30 million newest addition to the University of Missouri - Kansas City, was completed and dedicated in 1999. became the new home to the Departments of Physics, Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Geosciences. It also housed the Richard L. Sutton Geosciences Museum until it was recently moved to the third floor of the Miller Nichols Library.
