Constructed in 1897, this subway is the oldest tunnel in North America and third oldest in the world to use election traction. Frank Sprague, who was responsible for the creation of electric motor in 1886, is commemorated by this landmark, and interestingly John Quincy Adams was one of the members of the commission who approved the railway. An innovation in design and one of the most exciting Boston projects of the century, it still exists to connect the Boylston, Park Street, and Government Center stops.
