E.D. Gilmore first established the Gilmore Sanitarium in 1916. During the early 1960s the Sanitarium was used as a nursing home. After the years of being a nursing home, the Sanitarium was empty until the year 1974, which is when it became the museum. In 1975 the museum was accepted to the Mississippi State Registry for Historical Sites.
