Volney Atwood was one of the first settlers to arrive in Janesville in the 1830s from Vermont. In the 1840s he occupied the position of deputy and sheriff in Rock County before joining William Lawerence in the hardware business. He retired in the early 1900s.

Built in the 1850s, this structure displays one of the most popular architectural styles of the time: Italianate. Inspired by the Italian farmhouses that were often asymmetrical, this building had all of the important features including a low pitched roof with overhanging eaves and tall narrow windows.
