The Mattapoisett Historical Society preserves the town's history through exhibits, various events such as craft fairs, and educational programs. It houses over 30,000 objects including maritime and shipbuilding artifacts, Native American artifacts, antique vehicles, a blacksmith's shop and other attractions. It is located in a historic meeting house built in 1821.
Mattapoisett was once a prosperous whale ship building center. Records indicate that 300 whale ships were built here, and it possible that 300 more were constructed.
