Named for Abraham Baldwin, the founder of UGA. In late 2015 and early 2016, construction workers discovered unmarked graves of deceased African American slaves. Baldwin Hall was first constructed on top of the African American part of an old cemetery on Jackson Street in the 1930s. There is a bronze statue on North campus of him. A memorial was unveiled on November 16, 2018, in front of Baldwin Hall to honor the dead.

The University of Georgia, the birthplace of public higher education, has fostered the education of Georgians since 1785. However, the University of Georgia was not made available to students of color until January 9, 1961, upon the admittance of Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes. This formal integration does not accurately reflect the presence and contributions that African Americans have had on Georgia's campus. Furthermore, the integration of the University of Georgia has simply been the launching point for a tumultuous adjustment period that African American students, faculty, and visitors experienced in 1961 and still experience today. The purpose of this tour is to guide visitors through campus to highlight key history and sites of African American experiences at the University of Georgia.

University of Georgia Black History Tour

When the University of Georgia was chartered in 1785, the land selected for the University&nbsp;was an oak grove. By the time John Milledge and his committee bought this land in 1800, it stood as a barrier&nbsp;between the Native Americans and the White citizens of Georgia. A 36-acre college yard was laid out following this purchase.&nbsp;In 1834, the University decided that the Botanical Gardens it operated on the campus&nbsp;were too expensive. The land from the Botanical Gardens was sold and the funds were meant to be used to provide a proper fence and gate as the entrance to the school. It separated the University land from the city of Athens along Front Street (now Broad Street). The $1,000 from the Botanical Gardens&nbsp;sale lead to a commission the Athens Foundry to forge the iron gate and the Arch in 1856, which were both erected in 1858. In 1946, the Arch was moved back 6 feet and electric lights were added.&nbsp;A famous tradition surrounding the Arch originated in 1909.&nbsp;&nbsp;When Daniel Redfearn first entered the campus as a freshman, he vowed not to walk under the Arch until he had his diploma in hand. A passing faculty member heard his vow and shared it with his class. This started the tradition of students walking around the Arch and not under it until they graduate that is still upheld today.&nbsp;The Arch has also served as a place of political speech. In its history, there have been at least two instances of people being burned in effigy. In 1941, Governor Talmadge was burned in effigy by around 1,500 students when the University of Georgia was discredited due to political interference. Another instance occurred in late 1955. Governor Griffin, a segregationist, demanded that Georgia Tech refuse to participate in the Sugar Bowl due to their opponent, the Pittsburg Panthers, having an African-American player (Bobby Grier) on their team. Georgia Tech’s president and many Tech students protested Griffin’s demand. The students at the University of Georgia also protested. They had a banner that stated “For Once, We’re for Tech” and planned to burn Griffin in effigy. However, before they could set the effigy on fire, President Tate of the University of Georgia confiscated it. In addition, when political speech was banned from the campus in 1942, the city of Athens allowed students to build a platform six inches from campus directly in front of the Arch in order for Ellis Arnall, a candidate in the race for governor of Georgia, to give a speech. In more recent history, the Arch was a site where people placed items in remembrance and in mourning following the terrorist attacks on 9/11.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of these items are stored within the Special Collections Library on Hull Street.&nbsp;

The Arch is the symbolic entrance to the University of Georgia. It separates the city of Athens from the campus of the university. The Arch is modeled after the Georgia State seal, which was adopted in 1799, and was erected in 1858. It’s three columnns stand for Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation. 


The Arch

The Confederate Monument in Athens was erected by the Ladies’ Memorial
Association in Athens&nbsp;on May 5, 1871. By this date, there were only eight other
Confederate Monuments in the South, and only one other in the state of Georgia.1&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ladies’ Memorial Associations were by and large responsible
for memorializing the Confederacy throughout the southeastern United States in
the later 19th&nbsp;century. The
responsibilities of the LMA included decorating Confederate graves, moving the
remains of Confederate soldiers to cemeteries, and erecting monuments to their
memory. These local chapters of the greater Ladies’ Memorial Association
sprouted out of the wartime Ladies’ Aid Society.2 Members of this
Society sought to honor their husbands and Confederate soldiers. It became a
woman’s wartime civic duty to support the Confederate cause in any way they
could; more often than not, due to the fact that Confederate Soldiers were 2.5
times more likely to die in uniform than a Union Soldier,3 that
duty looked like finding and burying the remains of soldiers. Thus, when the
war was over, it was only fitting that these Societies would continue to tend
to the graves of soldiers and erect monuments in their respective towns.4
Because many white&nbsp;Southerners believed their&nbsp;cause to be&nbsp;honorable and moral, “homage and
public celebration” are the “only possible outcomes” of memorialization.5

&nbsp;

The monument in Athens was no exception to this idea of
Confederate honor and loyalty.&nbsp;The
LMA put forth a great deal of effort&nbsp;to fundraise for the erection of the monument. According to Augustus Longstreet Hull in his&nbsp;Annals of Athens, private
investments were the sole source of fundraising for the monument.&nbsp;No government
or federal funding, or even federal permission, was dedicated to the Athens
monument, unlike many later monuments.6 From the first
Confederate Memorial Day which took place on May 4, 1866 to the day the
monument was erected in 1871, the LMA in Athens worked tirelessly to fundraise
for the construction of the monument. There were concerts, plays put on by
University Thespian Groups and&nbsp;fairs, all advertised under the banner of&nbsp;“Come
one, come all, and let us raise our monument; let it be reared on high, so our
children’s children may from it learn how our brave ones died”.7
After the monument was instated on the corner of Washington Street and College
Avenue in 1871, even more money needed to be raised for what was written by
University Chancellor Andrew Lipscomb to be inscribed on the monument by a
mason in Augusta. The inscriptions include a poem, a nod to the Ladies’
Memorial Association, and six statements of honoring the Confederate dead. By
1872 and $4,444.44 later, the monument was complete.8&nbsp;

&nbsp;

All businesses and
schools were temporarily closed so that all the citizens of Athens and Clarke
County could take part in a procession and celebration that started at the
University Chapel, made its way to the original site of the monument, and
ended by decorating Confederate graves in the Oconee Cemetery. At both the
unveiling ceremony in 1871 and the inscription ceremony in 1872, speeches were
made. The first speech was made by Albert L. Mitchell, a local Confederate
Veteran. The second speech was made by Alexander Erwin, another Confederate
Veteran who “predicted that the South would rise out of its present low estate
forced upon it by the atrocious Reconstruction policies of the Radicals".9&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Shortly after these processions, life continued in Athens. As cars
became more popular, the location of the Confederate Monument caused it to be
“looked upon more as an impediment than a sentiment”.10&nbsp;Since its instatement, the monument
has been moved twice: firstly a block northward from its original location, and
secondly two and a half blocks southward to its current location of College
Avenue and the middle of Broad Street.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

In the wake of the monument incident in Charlottesville in 2017,
a city-wide meeting was called to discuss the potential removal of the Confederate
Monument in Athens. However, as of now, there are no real administrative
decisions being made.

The Athens Confederate Monument was erected in 1871 due to the efforts of the Ladies' Memorial Association and the monetary contributions of the Athens and Clarke County citizens. Its inscriptions honor the Confederate dead, its erection was followed by procession and celebration, and its stature and history reflect the greater sentiments of the culture in which it was first instated. The monument currently stands at the corner of College Avenue and Broad Street.

Phi Kappa Hall was the built by the members&nbsp;of the Phi Kappa Literary Society. Once the organization had grown too large for its original meeting place, money was raised to build Phi Kappa Hall in 1836 with grant money from Howell Cobb and John Milledge. The Hall was opened in July of that year and the Phi Kappa Literary Society was its first occupants.&nbsp; During the Civil War, Phi Kappa Hall was closed to allow students to fight in the war. Following the end of the war in 1865, the city of Athens&nbsp;was occupied by Union soldiers. The building became a stable for the soldiers and their supplies. The building itself was badly damaged and the inside was looted for funds or burned out of spite. Once students returned from the war, they made do with what they had to rebuild the building to its former glory. Meetings were in Phi Kappa Hall once again in the following year, in 1866. As a member of the Literary Society, Henry W. Grady (namesake of UGA`s School of Journalism and Mass Communication) was a major factor in raising funds for renovation.&nbsp; However, as the University began to grow in size, funds were allocated elsewhere. Phi Kappa Hall was not to be fully renovated during this time , making it increasingly difficult to hold regular meetings within its walls. The first floor of Phi Kappa Hall became the University`s first gymnasium in 1888.&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1935, the controversy surrounding , then current, Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge divided the occupants of Phi Kappa Hall over his white supremacist views and strict control over University affairs. Reportedly a portrait of Talmadge was burned on the steps of Phi Kappa Hall in protest of his upcoming visit to the University. Today, though, a picture of Talmadge does adorn the walls.&nbsp; The building was closed once again with the US involvement in the Second World War beginning in 1941. After the conclusion of the war in 1945, interest in literary societies declined as did the upkeep of Phi Kappa Hall. During the periods of cultural revolution in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, Phi Kappa Hall was home to some of the most vibrant debates in the state of Georgia concerning Civil Rights, Women`s Rights, the Vietnam War etc. The Phi Kappa Literary Society disbanded in the late 1970s leaving the building without an occupant for almost a decade. The Literary Society moved back in in 1991 with its refounding. It would, though, not stay the building`s only occupants for long. The Georgia Debate Union moved in in 1993, much to the dismay of the Literary Society. Overall Phi Kappa Hall would be renovated in 2004 and rededicated in 2005. The building kicked off its re dedication with a debate between an economics professor at the University and a representative from Communist USA.&nbsp; Today, only the second floor of the building is available for public view and&nbsp;the University of Georgia holds control over the grounds of Phi Kappa Hall, though the Phi Kappa Literary Society hopes someday to&nbsp;buy the building for themselves to ensure its longevity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phi Kappa Hall is a two story, red brick building that is located on the upper side of North Campus on the grounds of the University of Georgia. The Hall is home to the Phi Kappa Literary Society, an organization created in 1820 as the second-oldest Greek-lettered organization in the country. The Hall was constructed in 1836 at the cost of $5,000 and has been the site of many of the University`s great debate-- Independence for the Greek? Is War in Iraq a good thing?

Hunter-Holmes academic building
	The Hunter Holmes academic building is named after Charlayne Hunter-Gault, and Hamilton Holmes. Hunter and Holmes were the first two African American students to enroll in the University of Georgia. The building is located next to the arch and serves multiple purposes for UGA students, faculty and staff.
	The Hunter Holmes academic building or as it  was formerly known as the academic building, was originally two seperate buildings. One of the buildings housed some administrative offices and classrooms, this building was known as Ivy building. The other building was the University library. In the year 1903 it was proposed that these two buildings be joined together with stairs and columnns. The reason for the proposed consolidation was because the University was growing, and more classrooms were needed. The University had also just received $50,000 from George Foster Peabody for a new library which would leave the old library vacant.
The person in charge of the consolidation of the two buildings was Charles M. Strahan who was the head of the engineering department at the University of Georgia.  Strahan altered the exterior of the Ivy building in order for it to match the exterior of the library.  Strahan also added an extra floor to the Ivy building which made it match the height of the old library building. Strahan stuck to the proposal and combined the buildings through stairs and columnns. Strahan also added a Corinthian portico which supports an exposed stairway that gives access to the upper floors. The project was completed in 1906.
The academic building has a special place in alumni’s experience at the University of Georgia. An example of such an alumni is William Tate who was a Dean of the University of Georgia from 1946 to 1971. As a student William Tate had all of his  Freshman year classes, and most of his sophomore year classes in the building. The following year he would have four out of six classes in the building. During his tenure as dean at the University of Georgia, his office was in the academic building. In a 1964 article of the Red and Black newspaper one observer pointed out, “As the University grew so did the Academic Building, but it never outgrew Dean Tate”.
The building was renamed to Hunter-Holmes academic building on January 9th 2001 marking 40 years of desegregation at the University of Georgia. The academic building was the building in which both Hunter and Holmes registered for classes in 1961 at the University of Georgia. Many prominent people attended the ceremony including the Governor Roy Barnes, the mayor of Athens Doc Eldridge and the University president Michael Adams. Unfortunately, Holmes did not attend the ceremony as he had passed away six years earlier. During the ceremony Charlayne Hunter-Gault said, “I have always felt that the bond between (Hamilton) and me was as thick as blood. Now, it’s as thick as cement”.
During the ceremony a Georgia historical marker was put in front of the building. Although this building is supposed to serve as a sort of memorialization of Hunter and Holmes, one could argue that the marker presents the history as uncomplicated and does not mention the nuances of the integration of the University. The Marker mentions the fortitude displayed by the students, but it does not mention the fact that fortitude had be shown because UGA students protested the enrollment of Hunter and Holmes. In an almost poetic turn of events the Hunter Holmes academic building now holds the University's institute for African American studies. The building in which African Americans were not allowed in is now a place where they can now claim some sort of ownership. 


Hunter-Holmes Academic Building

LeConte Hall is named after scientist Joseph LeConte (1823-1901) who gained fame during the time for his scientific views and his work as an environmentalist. LeConte was a student at the University of Georgia from 1838-1841 and later returned in 1852 as a professor. Leconte would teach there until 1856 when he left for South Carolina College due to issues with the University of Georgia’s president at the time Alonzo Church.He would stay at South Carolina where he was chair of the Geology and Chemistry department until 1868, when he left to join the University of California at Berkeley along with his brother John. Joseph would become the first interim president of the University while also teaching physics. During his time in California, Leconte gained a national reputation both as a public and academic figure due to some of his published works on religion, evolution, and biology. Also because of these works Leconte would go on to gain membership into the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Sciences the latter of which he served as president of in 1892.Meigs Hall was previously known as LeConte Hall went it opened in 1905. The current building known as Leconte Hall was finished in 1937 and cost one hundred twenty-five thousand dollars to complete. It was one of the nicest University buildings at the time but its name was still accompanied by controversy. A 1937 article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution was titled “Memory of Banished Georgia Educator Revived in new Science Building”. It details the specifics of the new building while also giving a short biography of Leconte. The author Hoyt Ware states in the article his thoughts on the name:“The building is named for a man who never taught biology at the University, who was forced to resign his position on its faculty, and who made his scientific reputation in another part of the country in another field from that of biology.” The building would go on to have several changes throughout its history. Switching from biology to geography/geology to now being home to the history department. Recently LeConte hall has garnered attention for an article on its namesake and also for the large portrait of LeConte that had hung in the building entrance until it recently came down in 2018. A forum was held on April 2nd, 2019, deciding what to do with the portrait going forward.

LeConte Hall is the green roof three story building that is currently home to the University of Georgia’s history department. It houses multiple classrooms, offices, and in 2015 a student lounge was added for undergraduate history majors. Previously a chemistry building, LeConte Hall is notable not only for the history department but for its own history as well.

In the 1920s, the University of Georgia’s football program
expanded and talks began about building a new stadium on campus. After Dr.
Steadman V. Sanford, former athletic director and president of the University,
decided to move the team’s playing ground to the location of the current
Sanford Stadium, he and other football boosters from Atlanta planned to build a
completely new modern stadium in the heart of campus.1&nbsp;The advocacy for
the new stadium was not only athletic based, but Sanford knew that the stadium
would draw bigger crowds, more worthy opponents, which would “advance public
and legislative support for higher education.”1&nbsp;Sanford’s influence and
efforts toward creating the stadium would become the reason why for naming it
after him. As news spread about the construction of the stadium, many
architectural and engineering firms reached out to the University looking to
complete the project. A letter from Atwood and Nash Inc., shown below,
describes their interest in the project. The letter explains previous projects
they have completed, such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
stadium.2 The University would soon accept their business as construction began
less than a year.Construction commenced
in 1928 just below nearby Memorial Hall, where a natural valley was deemed the
perfect location for the stadium. The early construction required the help of
demolitions to remove land, and in some cases damaged homes, as seen in a
letter to a nearby resident.3 When the land was cleared for construction,
horses were used to carry and move material across the site and aided in the
construction of the stadium.4 The stadium was completed by October 1929, and
the first game on the field was the dedication game against Yale University.
Over 30,000 spectators watched the UGA victory from the stadium and all governors from
across the south were in attendance. The stadium, an engineering work of art, attracted
the largest crowd to ever observe a southern college football game.5A special feature of the
Stadium are the hedges that the Georgia Bulldogs play between. On both sides of
the field, there stretches a long line of hedges that have been there since the
completion of the stadium, as seen in the photo from 1933.6&nbsp;The initial
idea was to plant rose bushes along the sides, but after university
horticulturists said that the rose bushes wouldn’t grow well in the Athens
climate, they decided to plant privet ligustrum instead.5Since its completion,
Sanford Stadium has gone through many expansions and transformations, and is
now one of the biggest stadiums in the country. The Georgia Bulldogs throughout
the 20th and 21st century have had many remarkable players perform on the
field, such as Hershel Walker and Todd Gurley III. The Bulldogs have also had
outstanding seasons including the 1980 National Championship win and the 2018
Rose Bowl win. The University of Georgia is known for having an excellent
football team, and Sanford Stadium plays the perfect role as home field as its
setting in the heart of campus. <div><div>

Sanford Stadium, named after Dr. Steadman V. Sanford, is the current home of the Georgia Bulldogs Football team. The stadium has a capacity of over 90,000 seats and has been standing since it was erected in 1929. Sanford Stadium sits in the middle of the University of Georgia campus and draws enormous crowds every football season. Since its completion, the University of Georgia's Football program has grown tremendously and is now one of the most prominent collegiate teams in the country.

Stegeman
Coliseum was built in 1964, it was formally named Georgia Coliseum until it was
renamed in 1996&nbsp;in honor of&nbsp;Coach Herman James Stegeman for his many contributions to&nbsp;athletics
at The University of Georgia from 1919-1939. Coach Herman James Stegeman
contributed to athletics&nbsp;at
UGA&nbsp;by being the Head Coach in Football,
Basketball, Baseball, and Track &amp; Field and eventually the Athletic
Director.&nbsp;Originally the building Stegeman Hall&nbsp;was&nbsp;named
after him, but&nbsp;it&nbsp;was tore&nbsp;down
after the completion of the Ramsey Student Center, the spacing
help to accommodate the 1996 Olympics. Stegeman Coliseum was built at a cost of
$4.2 million to originally accommodate basketball, commencement ceremonies, and
agriculture, but would eventually have six additional sports compete inside the
Coliseum.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;Stegeman Coliseum had a capacity of 11,200 from 1964-1988, 10,400 from
1988-1994, and now holds 10,523 since 1994. It has had multiple renovations throughout
the years, while most notably the $20 million spent in the past 11 years. In
2010, The Coliseum had a $13-million renovation, which involved Stegeman’s
concourses, enhancing the spectators access to the concessions and restrooms,
upgraded graphics, and adding 5,000-square feet of concourse space on each side
of the arena. Because of this renovation, it won awards from the American
Institute of Architects and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North
America.

The Coliseum’s first game was on February 22, 1964 where
the Men’s Basketball team played against Georgia Tech, in front of the largest
crowd in the Coliseum’s history, where they upset the Yellow Jackets 81-68.
Since the Stegeman Coliseum has opened, it has had seven sports compete inside
the Coliseum such as; Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s
Gymnastics, Volleyball, Wrestling, and Men’s Tennis. It has also held numerous
indoor rock concerts with one notable performance by Elton John, who performed
in front of a sold-out crowd where he closed by performing a popular game day
anthem for UGA’s Football team, the song “Saturday Night’s Alright for
Fighting”.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
A few of the biggest events that have happen in Stegeman Coliseum are the
Women’s Gymnastic Championship, the Olympics in 1996, and the Great Southland
Stampede Rodeo. The Coliseum hosted the Women’s Gymnastics Championship on four
occasions, in 1989, 1995, 2001, and 2008. They have won the National
Championship 10 times in their history,
winning it twice at the Coliseum, first in
1989 and then as recent as 2008. In 1996, the state of Georgia hosted the
Summer Olympics and Stegeman Coliseum hosted two events: Rhythmic Gymnastics and Preliminary Volleyball to accommodate these events they
finally installed an air conditioning unit, which would lead to a huge problem
for one of the longest running events in the Coliseum, the Great Southland
Stampede Rodeo. The Rodeo was held at the Coliseum every April from 1972-2003.
Once the Coliseum had the air conditioning unit installed, it caused problems
for the Rodeo, because of the dust being detrimental to the air conditioning
and electronics. Stegeman Coliseum is now home to the Men’s and Women’s
Basketball, Women’s Gymnastics, and Volleyball, as they all compete in the
indoor stadium

Stegeman Coliseum was built in 1964, it was formally named Georgia Coliseum until it was renamed in 1996 to dedicate Coach Herman James Stegeman for his many contributions to the athletics at The University of Georgia from 1919-1939. Stegeman Coliseum was built at a cost of $4.2 million. It was built to accommodate basketball, commencement ceremonies, and agriculture. It is now home to 3 sports, which include Men's and Women's Basketball, Women's Gymnastics, and Volleyball.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The
Hugh Hodgson School of Music was built in 1995, and is made up of five stories
of classrooms, practice rooms, electronic music studios, piano labs, and other
types of rooms for music to be made. Edge Recital Hall is located within the school
of music, and the school also includes a music library, a choral suite, a band room,
and many offices for professionals in the music department, along with other
musical organizations. The School of Music is adjacent to the Performing Arts
Center, which contains two large concert halls. The smaller of the two, Ramsey
Concert Hall, is located in the upper deck of the Performing Arts Center. The
larger of the two, Hodgson Concert Hall, is named after Hugh Hodgson along with
the School of Music. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hugh Hodgson had a vast influence on
the music department at the University of Georgia, which is clearly exemplified
by his name being continued in a fitting and public way. Hugh Hodgson was born
in 1893 in Athens, Ga. He showed natural talent for music at a very young age,
and began his musical career on the piano, which he continued to play
throughout adulthood. He attended school at the University of Georgia, where he
studied zoology and continued his musical endeavors. After college, he ran music departments for&nbsp;churches in the area, while also playing music
for the public. Hodgson did this until he entered his career. In 1928, Hodgson
was hired as a professor at the University of Georgia, and became the first
director of music at the University.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hodgson created numerous opportunities
for everyone to make music, in and around Athens. When he became the director of
music, his work to spread music began and took off wildly. In addition to
teaching music classes, he was well known for the programs he began at UGA for
all music students, including his Men’s Glee Club. He also conducted a
University Little Symphony Orchestra. Along with these organizations for music
students, he wanted to create programs that non-music students could be
involved in. He began teaching multiple Music Appreciation classes, for
students who wanted to learn about music history and its&nbsp;cultural value. He also
began a music festival for music teachers and musicians throughout Georgia,
that continued for 22 years. People came from all over the state, and
eventually the country, to attend this festival every year. On campus, Hodgson
also started a weekly music appreciation hour, which occurred every Thursday
and gave students and locals in Athens an opportunity to hear new music each week. Musical
groups at the University of Georgia participated in these weekly sessions,
including the international women’s music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota. These
programs were successful, inclusive for musically or non-musically inclined individuals, and groundbreaking for live music in
Georgia and at UGA.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In February 1941, a newspaper article was written in reference to another article by Ralph McGill of the
Atlanta Constitution. The title reads that Hodgson is called a “Modern Johnny Appleseed to Music
Lovers Throughout Georgia”.&nbsp;Hodgson was compared to Johnny Appleseed due to his tireless efforts to bring
music to the common people of Georgia. Hodgson was not only interested in those
musical scholars, but for all people to have the opportunity to interact with
music and its powerful abilities. When Hodgson took his job as head of the department
of music, radio broadcasting was still new, and music was not very easily
accessible for many. Most of Hodgson’s work was to further programs where music
could be heard by locals and non-musical scholars. The year 1941 was very important to Hodgson and the music department at the University of Georgia, because&nbsp;the Fine Arts Auditorium building on North Campus&nbsp;was completed, and Hodgson’s music department was able to locate itself there. The Fine Arts building remained the home for the music department until the Hugh Hodgson School of Music was built on East Campus in 1995.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The
namesake of Hugh Hodgson is quite fitting for the School of Music, since he did
so much for furthering music at the University and in the community. Hugh Hodgson
also arranged the version of the UGA fight song, “Glory, Glory” that the
Redcoat Band uses today.&nbsp;

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music was built in 1995, along with the Performing Arts Center, the Georgia Museum of Art, and the Lamar Dodd School of Art. All are located on East Campus at the University of Georgia, and form a quadrant of performing and visual arts buildings on campus. Hugh Hodgson, the namesake of the music building, was the founder of the original music department in the Fine Arts building on North Campus at the University of Georgia. Hodgson was a musician himself, and started many programs at UGA and throughout Georgia to further musical arts.
