In April 1920, Marquette Fr.
President Herbert Noonan, S.J., bought two residences south of Johnston Hall;
the house of General Frederic C. Winkler and the house of Dr. Harry Hitz,
located on 1120 W. Sycamore, now Michigan, Avenue and 11th Street.
While General Winkler’s house served multiple academic and adminstrative roles after
its purchase, the Harry Hitz home served a very special purpose during its time
on campus. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The house was renamed the Drexel Lodge after Katherine Drexel,
the only living saint to visit Marquette University, and from 1923 until 1953
served as the women’s student union. Although the Drexel Lodge was small in
comparison to Marquette Hall, the male only student union built in 1924, it
offered a unique place for the women of Marquette to unwind or study before,
during, or after school. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On the first floor were two large rooms filled with easy
chairs, work tables, and other furniture. One of the main rooms was known as
the Atlas Room due to the dozens of flags on the walls. The Atlas Room was also
the only room where male students were allowed. The second floor hosted the
office of the Dean of Women, which included a reception room staffed by
students. The third floor was home to nuns who were studying at Marquette
Universtiy. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1953, the opening of the Brooks Memorial Union at 1355
W. Wisconsin Avenue, now the location of Raynor Library, ushered in the end of Drexel
Lodge because it was coed and offered more amenities than Drexel. The building was
used less and less and was eventually demolished in 1969.

From 1923 to 1953 Drexel Lodge offered a place for Marquette's female students to meet, relax, eat, and study during the school day. Though not as fancy or as big as the Marquette Union, which opened in 1924 and served women only during certain times, Drexel Lodge offered a place for the women of Marquette to relax, study, and eat. 

Drexel Lodge

Marquette University is a Jesuit, Catholic University located in Milwaukee. Chartered in 1881, the school named after the explorer and missionary Reverend Jacques Marquette, SJ, and is located just west of downtown Milwaukee. The St. Joan of Arc chapel has been
serving the spiritual needs of Marquette students ever since it was brought to
campus in 1966. The chapel gets its name from a legend of St. Joan of Arc.
Inside the chapel is a stone taken from a different chapel where, before a
battle, the future saint had knelt in prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. After
her prayer, she bent down and kissed the stone.&nbsp;
Ever since, the stone has seemed colder than every other stone around
it. This stone can still be seen and touched in the chapel today—and it still
feels colder.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The chapel was built during the fifteenth
century in the French village of Chasse in the Rhone River Valley. After the
First World War, Jacques Couëlle, a young French architect, was traveling
through France and happened upon the ruins of the chapel. Couëlle, who became a
leading authority on the restoration of ancient buildings, was so impressed
that he decided to restore the chapel to its full glory. He made careful drawings
of the building and numbered and measured the stones to make sure they were the
perfect fit. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In
1927, the chapel was moved piecemeal to its new home in the United States where
the St. Joan of Arc stone was incorporated into the chapel. In 1962, the estate
the chapel belonged to passed to Mr. and Mrs. Marc B. Rotjman who donated the
chapel to Marquette University. Disassembly began in June 1963 and took nine
months. In November 1964 a fleet of trucks brought the chapel to Marquette. The
reconstruction took began in 1965 and on May 26, 1966, the chapel was dedicated
to Saint Joan of Arc. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To
this day, the chapel continues to function as a Catholic church. Mass is celebrated
Monday through Friday at noon and 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday when classes
are in session. Private tours are given on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Inside the chapel, visitors can touch
the St. Joan of Arc stone and sit down in the chair pews to gaze at the gothic
architecture. They can also look at the tomb cover of the Chevalier de
Sautereau, a knight from Chasse. The garden serves as a nice lunch area for
students who want to enjoy the weather during the spring and fall. The St. Joan
of Arc chapel is a great example of medieval architecture

Since 1966, the St. Joan of Arc chapel has served as the spiritual center for many students of Marquette University. All Marquette students and those who have visited Marquette before know the St. Joan of Arc chapel’s gothic beauty. The St. Joan of Arc chapel is named after a relic from the saint’s life still residing in the chapel today. 
	The chapel was located in the village of Chasse in the Rhone River Valley. After the French Revolution, the chapel fell into disrepair. However, after the First World War, a young French architect named Jacques Couëlle restored it to its former glory. 
	In 1927, the chapel was moved to Long Island where the relic of St. Joan of Arc was incorporated into the chapel. The chapel would stay there for thirty-five years before Mr. and Mrs. Marc B. Rotjman bought the estate and donated the chapel to Marquette University in 1962. The chapel was slowly reconstructed and finished in 1966 at its new permanent home, Marquette University where it continues to serve the spiritual needs of the students. 


St. Joan of Arc Chapel 

As the namesake of Marquette University, Pere Marquette is commemorated in the Marquette University’s seal. A statue in Pere Marquette Park (900 N. Plankinton Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) also features a statue of the missionary. The park is near where Marquette was supposed to have landed his canoe when visiting the area that would become Milwaukee. To commemorate Marquette’s impact on Wisconsin history, the state donated a marble statue in his likeness to the National Statuary Hall Collection in 1896.1In 1956 Alumnus John Madden and his wife Mary offered to fund a sculpture of Marquette. The University commissioned New York-based artist Ron Knepper to create the work, which was dedicated on September 23, 2005.2 Located immediately west of Coughlin Hall, the bronze statue portrays a mature Father Marquette. It stands eight feet two inches tall and weighs between 2,500 and 3,000 pounds. The sculpture depicts Marquette carrying a map, a nod to his explorations, and wearing a crucifix at his belt.3 During winter, Marquette students drape a Marquette scarf around the sculpture’s neck; graduating students often have their picture taken near the statue.

Located in front of Coughlin Hall on the Marquette campus, the Father Jacques Marquette sculpture pays tribute to the university’s namesake. Father Marquette was a 17th century French Jesuit missionary and explorer. He is particularly known for surveying and mapping the northern portion of the Mississippi River alongside French-Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet.

On May 4th,
1970 at Kent State University when members of the Ohio National Guard opened
fire on student protestors resulting in the death of four students. The
incident sparked outrage across the country, and numerous college students
began to protest in response. Like most major universities, Marquette saw its
share of demonstrations in the immediate aftermath of the Kent State Shootings.
On May 6th the student senate passed a resolution calling for a
nonviolent strike. Father Raynor also called a special mass in the morning,
which was followed by numerous presentations from Marquette faculty regarding
nonviolence. Later a rally of around 2,000 students moved from Lalumiere Hall
to Wisconsin Avenue, where they encountered Milwaukee Police in riot gear.
While this demonstration ended without incident, firebombs had been set off
around the campus by protestors, causing minimal damage. The following days saw
sporadic demonstrations in the streets, numerous bomb threats (including the
discovery of an “authentic looking device” in McCormick Hall), and broken
windows at various buildings. By the fall semester of 1970 demonstrations on
campus had largely stopped, with only occasional isolated incidents, the most
notable of which came in September when demonstrators harassed Nuclear
Scientist Edward Teller following a speech he gave at the Chemistry Building.
Teller was a famed nuclear scientist who had worked under Robert Oppenheimer on
the Manhattan Project and was one of the leading figures in the development of
the hydrogen bomb. Teller was a particularly controversial figure due to his
pro-nuclear advocacy, including his support for the buildup of the United
States’ nuclear arsenal. Due to his ideology Teller was often the subject of
much scrutiny among antiwar activists.

The second half
of the 1960s was one of the most tumultuous in American history as the country
was engulfed in numerous protests over a myriad of causes, primarily in support
of civil rights and opposition for the Vietnam War. College campuses were often
a hotbed for such demonstrations due to the ideological nature of the
institutions. Opposition to the Vietnam War in particular evoked high emotions
that occasionally resulted in direct confrontations between protestors and
state employees (Police, Military members, the National Guard, etc.). While the
Kent State Shooting Protests were some of the most volatile on Marquette’s
campus, they certainly were not the only demonstrations. The earliest protest
occurred in 1967 when students led a sit-in at O’Hara Hall (later moving to
Brooks Student Union) to protest the presence of recruiters from Dow Chemicals
on campus. Along with the general outrage at the war itself, students also
protested the presence on campus of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Many
who opposed the war also opposed the fact that a Catholic university would have
an ROTC program on campus, as they saw the ROTC as contradictory to Catholic
values. Tensions built towards a series of incidents on campus between April 15th
and April 22nd, 1969. On the morning of April 15th,
nearly 100 protestors marched into the old gymnasium where the Army and Navy
ROTC Departments were located. The protestors called for the immediate
termination of the university’s ROTC program. The following day more
demonstrators prepared to march through the gym, but dispersed after Milwaukee
Police arrived. Smaller demonstrations continued in the following days, until
on April 22nd several demonstrators unsuccessfully attempted to
block ROTC members from entering the gym before dissipating once the Milwaukee
Police were alerted. They then moved towards the Joan of Arc Chapel, and around
4:00 p.m. sixty or so students barricaded themselves inside the chapel where
they continued to call for an end to the university’s ROTC program. Milwaukee
Police, responding to a reported bomb threat in the chapel, eventually burst
through the barricade and arrested sixty-eight students as 100 to 200
demonstrators watched outside the chapel. In response to this arrests some 150
students protested outside of O’Hara Hall late into the night. In the weeks
following the incident opponents of the Vietnam War continued to demonstrate
throughout campus with demands such as amnesty for those arrested at the Joan
of Arc Chapel, the resignation of Father Raynor, and the termination of the
ROTC at Marquette, none of which were conceded.

Between 1967 and 1971 numerous student protests opposing the Vietnam War occurred on Marquette University's campus. While these protests took place at various points throughout campus, they largely focused on the area around the central mall. These protests often manifested themselves in the form of sit-ins or public gathering, but occasionally in bomb threats and vandalism. Among the most tumultuous incidents included the 1969 protests of the ROTC's presence on campus (which resulted in between 100 and 200 students arrested) and the protests in response to the Kent State Shootings in 1970.

Vietnam War Protests, Marquette University 

Following World War Two, the University saw enrollment sharply increase—from less than 2000 in 1936, to over 5000 in 1950—which necessitated the expansion of classrooms and dormitories.&nbsp; As such, the University prioritized expansion and development initiatives. Looking for new space and growth opportunities, the board of governors wanted new class space and decided to invest in a College of Business—both as a physical building and as an institution. Construction of the building, located on 13th street behind Gesu Church, began in 1949 and finished in 1951. This facility was primarily funded by private donations as well as the University’s budget surplus and has operated as the business administration building ever since. With the building of Straz Hall, the College of Business Administration was born with full administrative/academic autonomy.&nbsp; 

Straz Hall has maintained the same role since its founding but has expanded in its capacity. To accommodate increased enrollment over the decades and interest in business education, the college completed new classrooms, a computer lab, a reading room, faculty offices, and a research center as well as a student lounge and a large lecture hall in 1983.&nbsp; 

At the same time as these renovations, the business building—and college, as well—took on the name of the distinguished alumnus of the school David Straz. Now, the building holds the name David Straz Jr. Hall. David Straz earned a finance degree from Marquette business school in 1965 and later attended the law school as well. He created a successful career in banking and used his wealth to become a patron to his alma mater. He later went on to help fundraise for the library and other Marquette facilities, resulting in another facility being named after him—Straz Tower.&nbsp; 

In 2006, the College invested in the Applied Investment Management program which has allowed select students the opportunity to manage University endowment funds. The purpose was to expose Finance majors to real world investment practices. The program is highly regarded and has brought much distinction to the College. The program occupies distinct space on the second floor of building, which serves as a classroom and mimics a stock exchange with real time market information and stock indices prices.

Straz Business Hall, originally just called the Hall of Business Administration, was built to launch the new College of Business Administration. Over the years, it has operated as such and expanded with new needs. In 1984, it was renamed to David A. Straz, Jr. Hall.

The
University invested over a million dollars into building the three-story facility
for faculty and administrative offices. The building originally housed the Departments
of English, History, Philosophy, and Theology. It was also the headquarters for
the Honors Program. 

Charles
L. Coughlin is the namesake for the facility. He was born in South Dakota and
moved to Milwaukee in 1910, where he spent his life and career with Briggs and
Stratton, a local, Milwaukee based company that produces small gasoline engines.
At Briggs and Stratton, he served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. Throughout his life, he financially endowed Marquette
and provided support in any way that he could. Furthermore, he served on the
Board of Governors and was even awarded an honorary degree from the Law School.
He was known for a deep love of poetry and philosophy as well as a deep sense
of morality—which made the building designation for the Humanities fitting.

In
2013, the English, Philosophy, and Theology departments moved to Marquette
Hall, and History moved to Sensenbrenner hall. Coughlin was substantially renovated
and became home to the Office of Student Educational Services, which hosts and
organizes peer tutoring as well as the Urban Scholars programs, which pairs
local high school students with an undergraduate student as their tutors. The building also houses the Educational Opportunity Program, which assists
first-generation college students.

Marquette University built Coughlin Hall, located behind Cudahy Hall on Wisconsin and 13th Street, in 1977. Originally, the facility was intended to house disciplines in the humanities, but it has gone on to hold various functions throughout the years. The building is named after Briggs and Stratton executive Charles L. Coughlin. 

Coughlin Hall

Tory Hill neighborhood in
southeastern Milwaukee virtually disappeared in 1964 with the construction of
the Marquette Interchange situated between Interstate 94 and 43. Wisconsin’s
largest single construction project required the razing of over 500 buildings
within the thirty-five acre area.1&nbsp;While some Milwaukee citizens praised the
Interstate for its added transportation convenience, others argued the city had
lost a part of its soul.2

&nbsp;Tory Hill emerged in the
1840s as a primarily Irish community during the height of Irish immigration to
the United States.&nbsp; The neighborhood
stretched from N. 4th Street to N. 13th St in the area
between W. Michigan St. and the railroad tracks south of St. Paul Avenue.3&nbsp;The hill sloping down to the Menomonee River Valley gave Tory Hill the second
part of its name.&nbsp; The first part of the
name originates from a derogatory name given to the Irish by the English in the
16th and 17th centuries. The word Tory derived from the
Irish word “toraidhe” meaning robber, an English insult referring to the Irish
as bandits.4&nbsp;In
1847 the Milwaukee Archdiocese decided the neighborhood needed a church for its
large Catholic population. Two years later, St. Gall’s Catholic Church was
completed on N. 2nd and Sycamore (Michigan St.).&nbsp; Residents also attended Gesu Church on 12th
Street and Grand Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue).

At the end of the nineteenth
century, Tory Hill saw a rise in stockyards and packinghouses due to the
booming railroad industry.&nbsp; The primarily
working-class neighborhood lived amongst smoke and soot. The crime rate was
high and alcoholism was widespread.&nbsp;
Residents of the Third Ward, another predominantly Irish neighborhood,
began moving into Tory Hill following the destructive fire of October 28, 1892
that left 1,900 homeless.5&nbsp;Yet by the turn of the twentieth century, the Irish population in the
neighborhood fell as German and Eastern European immigrants began to move into
the area.6&nbsp;Famous residents of Tory Hill include Hollywood actor Pat O’Brien (1899-1983)
and Medal of Honor recipient Thomas Toohey, recognized for his heroism during
the Civil War.7

Today, the name Tory Hill brings to mind Marquette Law Library’s café or the three-block street that connects W. Michigan and W. Clybourn Streets at the southeast corner of Marquette campus. Yet the name carries with it the rich history of a bygone Milwaukee immigrant neighborhood.


Tory Hill 

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; At the time it was finally demolished, the building then known as O’Hara Hall
was by far the oldest building on Marquette University’s campus. In fact the
building itself was even older than Marquette University. Although its exact
age is unknown, the general consensus is that the building was constructed having
been built sometime around 1870. The building was once the private residence of
General Frederick Charles Winkler. Winkler served as a Captain in the 26th
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War
and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1866 he was nominated for
promotion to the rank of brevet Brigadier General of volunteers by President
Andrew Johnson, which the Senate would later approve. After the war, Winkler
moved into the building that would become O’Hara Hall. As a war hero and a
member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, Winkler often hosted numerous important
guests at his home, including President Theodore Roosevelt, who once spent the
night there. In 1920 Winkler sold the building to Marquette University.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
During its 90 years in service to the university O’Hara Hall underwent two
changes in name. The building was first named Lalumiere Hall in 1923 after
Father Stanislaus Lalumiere, a Jesuit Superior and academic who served as
Marquette College’s President from 1887 to 1889. During this time, Lalumiere held
classrooms for math, foreign languages, and theology courses. In 1938 the
University renovated both the interior and exterior of Lalumiere Hall. Upon
completion of the renovation the offices of President Raphael McCarthy and the
university administration moved into Lalumiere. Thus the building was briefly
and aptly named Administration Hall. However, just a year later it was renamed
O’Hara Hall, after Charles O’Hara, a member of the Board of Governors who had
provided some of the funding for the building’s renovations. O’Hara hall would
remain home to the university’s administration until its demolition in 2010.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
By the 2000s it became increasingly apparent that O’Hara Hall was very
outdated. Between the lack of handicap accessibility and the inferior utilities
(plumbing, heating, etc) the cost of renovating the building became far higher
than the cost of simply demolishing it and replacing it. Following the
announcement and subsequent construction of Zilber Hall, O’Hara Hall was
abandoned and ultimately demolished in 2010. Today the location of Zilber Hall
is a parking lot that sits nestled between Sensenbrenner Hall and Eckstein
Hall.

As
O’Hara Hall was home to the university’s administration it was frequently the
site of numerous protests. Throughout the 1960s Marquette University students
held numerous protests primarily over issues of Civil Rights and opposition to
the Vietnam War. Specific incidents such as the assassination of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. and the Kent State shootings sparked demonstrations throughout
Marquette’s campus, with O’Hara Hall as a focal point. These protests ranged
from student gatherings outside of O’Hara Hall, to sit-ins inside the building.


&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
While the bulk of student protests at O’Hara Hall occurred during the 1960s,
they certainly were not limited to that decade. During the 1980s the issue of
South African Apartheid was a major concern for many throughout the
United States. While Marquette University officially denounced the institution
and practice, the University still held stocks in many South African businesses
who adhered to Apartheid. Thus students began to demand that the
university divest from such businesses and even led a protest outside of O’Hara
Hall in 1985. Throughout the rest of its life O’Hara Hall remained the target
for many student protests, albeit ones that were on a much smaller scale than
those of the 1960s.

Built around 1870, the building that became O'Hara Hall served the university for nearly 90 years. Once the personal home of General Frederick Charles Winkler, Marquette University purchased the building in 1920 where it underwent multiple name changes. For a large part of its history, O'Hara hall served as the center for the university's administration. Because of this capacity, the building was also subject to numerous student protests throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. Ultimately the upkeep for the building proved too costly and it was razed in 2010, and the land where it stood was converted into a parking lot.

O'Hara Hall (1870-2010)

Currently home to Marquette University's History Department and the&nbsp;College of Arts and Sciences, Sensenbrenner Hall has stood since 1924. However before construction of the current building, the plot of land was once home to a private residence known as the Mackie Home. In 1910 the university purchased the Mackie Home and converted it into a Law School. It served in this capacity until 1923 when the building was razed and construction for the current building began shortly afterwards. The site immediately behind the Mackie Home was briefly home to an eighty-foot radio tower for the university-owned WHAD from 1922 to 1924. Throughout the building's 93 year history, it has undergone significant renovations at various times. Construction for the first major addition to Sensenbrenner Hall began in 1967 and concluded in 1968. The addition added a Curvilinear Legal Research Center to the southern facade of the building. In 1971 the building underwent interior renovation which concluded in 1972. Yet another&nbsp;round of renovations began in 1982 when new additions were added to the Legal Research Center. In 2010 the Law School moved into the newly built Eckstein Hall, and Sensenbrenner Hall underwent its most recent round of renovations, as the building was converted into the home of the College of Arts and Sciences. Originally known simply as the Law School, Sensenbrenner Hall was dedicated to&nbsp;Frank J. Sensenbrenner in 1955.&nbsp;Among his many accomplishments, Sensenbrenner
served as the second President and CEO of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation and is
credited with inventing the Kotex brand of care products. In 1927 Marquette University President Reverend Albert Fox named Sensenbrenner a member of the university's&nbsp;Board of Governors.&nbsp;Throughout his distinguished life Sensenbrenner was also a major benefactor of the university.&nbsp;Sensenbrenner also holds numerous honorary
degrees from multiple universities including one&nbsp;from Marquette University’s Law School.

Once the site of a private residence and an eighty-foot radio tower, this location is currently home to Sensenbrenner Hall, home of Marquette University's History Department and the College of Arts and Sciences. The building was completed in 1924 and served as served as the university's Law School from 1924 to 2010. Similar to other campus buildings, Sensenbrenner Hall has been renovated several times and served a number of purposes throughout its history. The building was named in honor of Frank President J. Sensenbrenner in 1927. Sensenbrenner was a member of the university's Board of Governors, a donor to the university, and the former CEO of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation.

Sensenbrenner Hall

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The
art deco building known today as Carpenter Tower was originally built in 1922
as the Catholic Knights Tower. In 1956 Marquette University began to lease
three floors of the hotel in order to provide housing for women students. In 1960,
the university purchased the entire sixteen-floor tower for roughly $1 million.
Following renovation, it was renamed M. Carpenter Tower and became home to
hundreds of female students. Carpenter Tower made history in 1972 when it
became the first coed dorm at Marquette University.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
namesake of Carpenter Tower is unique in that it is not named after one person,
but rather three members of the same family. The building’s first namesake,
Michael Carpenter was a prominent Wisconsin businessman in the nineteenth
century. Carpenter founded the Carpenter Baking Company in 1880 and later
became a benefactor to Marquette University. However, it was Michael’s two
children, Matthew and Mary, who largely contributed to the university. The two
siblings made an annual financial gift to the university in honor of their father.
Matthew himself served as a member of Marquette University’s Board of Governors
from 1938 to 1950. For a time two buildings were named after Matthew on
Marquette’s campus. In addition to the dorm, the original student union was
renamed after Matthew in 1953.

Carpenter Tower is Marquette University's second tallest residence hall. Purchased by the university in 1960, the 180 foot tower today is home to some 280 underclassmen. Like many other residence halls on Marquette's campus, the tower at one time was a hotel. One particularly unique fact about Carpenter Tower is that it is actually named after three people.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In
1928, construction for the building that eventually became Cobeen Hall was
completed. The eight story building situated on Eleventh Street was known as
the LaSalle Hotel. Throughout its existence the hotel’s lounge (Known as the
“Circle Room”) hosted a number of famous performers. Most notably Nat King
Cole, who performed at the lounge with his Trio in 1946. The performance was
recorded but the tapes were lost for over fifty years when they were released
on the 1999 CD entitled The Nat King Cole
Trio – Live at the Circle Room. In 1964 Marquette University purchased the
LaSalle Hotel as part of an initiative to increase student housing on campus.
The building then underwent significant renovation at a cost of $2.2 million.
Upon completion of the renovation the all-girls dorm was renamed Cobeen Hall in
honor of longtime Marquette Administrator Charles Cobeen.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cobeen
graduated from Marquette University’s College of Business Administration in
1920. His first administrative role within the university came while he was
still an undergrad when his friend (and future Marquette President) the Very Reverend
Peter Brooks, SJ asked him to serve as the secretary and manager of the planned
student union, a position that Cobeen held for twenty-six years. In 1947 Cobeen
succeeded Henry Banzhaf as the university’s business manager. In 1948 Cobeen
and Brooks worked hard to secure funding for a new student union. The union was
completed in 1953 with Cobeen named “Father of the Marquette Union.” Upon his
retirement in 1963, Marquette President Father O’Donnell honored Cobeen’s
forty-two years of service to the university with the Pere Marquette Award.&nbsp;

Marquette University's only all-girl dorm, Cobeen Hall is home to some 380 freshman. Originally built in 1928 as the LaSalle Hotel, the building at one time served as a venue for a performance by the Nat King Cole Trio. Marquette purchased the building in 1964 and renamed it after longtime university administrator Charles Cobeen.

Johnston
Hall is the oldest structures built by the University. Over the decades, it has
housed Marquette's Liberal Arts, Economics and Journalism departments as well
as a chapel, living quarters for members of the Society of Jesus, and a
library. The chapel housed religious relics of significance to the Jesuit
order—relics associated with figures such as St. Francis Xavier, St. Peter of
Canisius, St. Aloysius, and more. (Now, the relics are housed at the Jesuit
community chapel inside the Jesuit residence.) Although located adjacent to Church
of the Gesu, a student chapel was considered important to have, since the Gesu
was a diocesan, — not a University chapel. However, a bridge was built
to connect the two buildings. It is worth noting that at this time, the
College—not yet a full University—required students to attend religious
exercises. The architect combined Gothic and Victorian styles and included
stained glass from Germany. Primarily religious in nature, they heavily
featured Jesuit Saints, especially those whose relics the Jesuits owned.
Currently, the stained-glass windows are in storage in Memorial Library.&nbsp; 

This
multi-purposed facility was made possible by its namesake, Robert Johnston, who
was president of the Robert Johnston Company, which specialized in cookies,
biscuits, and chocolate. Johnston died shortly before the building could be
finished.&nbsp; 

Johnston
Hall has had different purposes throughout the decades and has been a witness
to the dynamic changes on campus and in America. One of the first buildings in
Milwaukee to have air conditioning, and the first to be constructed of
concrete, almost every department on campus has used its classrooms at one time
or another. In 1973,
the Jesuits residing in the Hall left and the Chapel was removed. As the
University grew, the building came to be home to just the Journalism and
Communication departments. Renovations undertaken in the early 1970s
implemented technology and infrastructure to allow for studies in television
and radio broadcasting. 

Marquette
has prioritized maintenance of the facility—while also accommodating
renovations. The State Historical Society recognized Marquette’s efforts in
preserving Johnston Hall with a Historic Preservation Award in 1986. Today, Johnston Hall still serves the
University as the home for the Diedrich College of Communication and
Journalism.

Johnston Hall is one of Marquette University’s most historic buildings. Built in 1906, when the school was still in its infancy, the building originally housed facilities for worship, academics, and living space. Johnston Hall is now home to the school of Communication and Journalism.

Gesu
began in 1849 as St. Gall’s Church on 2nd and Sycamore (present day
Michigan Street) where Bishop Martin J. Henni presided over a predominately
Irish Catholic congregation.&nbsp; A year
prior, Henni, on a visit to Rome, had met with Jesuit Priest Chevalier
Guillaume DeBoey. DeBoey gave Henni a gift of $16,000 on the stipulation Henni
would establish a Jesuit college. Sixteen years later, in 1864, Marquette
College secured its charter from the state legislature. Nine years later, the
Archdiocese bought land on 12th Street and Grand Avenue to build
Gesu Church. After it was completed in 1873, Gesu served the Catholic
population of Milwaukee, mostly Irish and German immigrants.&nbsp; In 1907, Marquette College moved to its
present day location next to Gesu Church. &nbsp;

The
Church was named after the mother church of the Jesuits in Rome. Renowned
German-American Milwaukee architect H.C. Koch designed the French Gothic church.&nbsp; It is noted for its stunning stained glass
windows, designed by the Royal Bavarian Institute. Of particular note is the twenty-eight
foot Rose Window, set in a Gothic arch above the choir loft. Additionally, the Church displays an original
sculpture by Italian artist Giovanni Dupre, the Pieta. Purchased at the Paris
Exposition of 1867 by wealthy Milwaukeean Harriet Cramner, it depicts Christ in
the arms of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross.&nbsp; Gesu can also boast an original Kimball pipe
organ with 4,000 pipes and flutes. Acquired by the parish in 1903, it is
regarded by musicians as one of the most outstanding church organs in the
United States. The Church itself is a work of art. The main alter in the upper
church was built by Italian artisans of marble quarried in Italy. Gesu also features
two more alters in the upper church as well as eleven alters in the lower
church.

Gesu
Church can fit up to 2,000 people in the upper church and around 1,2000 in the
lower church. The parish remains to this day a thriving center of religious
life in the Marquette and surrounding Milwaukee community. In addition to
holding daily services and Catholic sacraments, the Parish provides religious
education and has many parish and service committees to foster community
involvement. In the spirit of Jesuit global service and ministry, Gesu has
partnered with Sts. Simon and Jude Parish in Haiti. Along with monetary
support, every year members of Gesu Parish travel to Sts. Simon and Jude on a
mission trip to meet with local parishioners and meet the needs of the
community.While
Gesu Parish and Marquette University are separately incorporated, they share a
collaborative relationship.&nbsp; The
university holds weekly masses at Gesu at which Jesuit priests assist in the
liturgy. Gesu also hosts many of the university’s special religious events,
such as the Mass of the Holy Spirit, which ushers in the start of each academic
year. One can also attend many concerts at Gesu, such as performances by the
Marquette Liturgical Choir.

On May 21, 1893, the cornerstone of Gesu Church was laid on 12th Street and Grand Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue).  The building was modeled after the Cathedral of Chartres in France. Nearly 125 years later, the Jesuit parish serves both Marquette University and the larger Milwaukee Catholic community.

At a
cost of $31 million, NBBJ architecture firm designed the facility; NBBJ also
designed the Staples Center in Los Angeles and Miller Park in Milwaukee.1&nbsp;The Al includes a 3,700-seat arena where the university’s women’s basketball
and volleyball teams compete. It also contains a full-sized practice gym, a
4,000 square foot strength and conditioning facility, a sports medicine suite
(featuring a three-pool hydrotherapy room), a weight room, locker rooms, and
business and administration offices.2

&nbsp;The Al
McGuire celebrates Marquette’s athletic achievements and basketball heritage. A
statue of Al McGuire in the lobby depicts his triumphant pose after the
last-minute Marquette victory over the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1974.
The 1977 national championship trophy is held inside the men’s basketball
locker room.3

&nbsp;Just
inside the main entrance is Marquette’s Ticket Office. There one can purchase
admission for seven of the university’s sports: men’s and women’s basketball,
men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball.4

Opened in 2003, the Al McGuire Center, or “The Al,” is Marquette’s state-of-the-art athletics complex. It is named after the legendary men’s basketball coach who led the team to an NCAA championship in 1977.

Milwaukee in 1859 was chosen to host the Milwaukee State Fair. It had started in 1851 in Janesville and had moved to different locations each year. The fair hosted a number of exhibits on machinery, livestock, and produce. The fair managed to pull in $5,000, which was distributed to the winners of the various competitions being held that day like best swine, biggest poultry, and so on. The State Fair in Milwaukee was notable because the future president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, gave the keynote speech.           In the first half of the speech, Lincoln spoke about the farmer’s ability to make do with what little he had and how new technology would help him produce more crops. Then he spoke about a prevailing social theory at that time, the mudsill theory. The theory states nobody works for free and that those with capital control people like hired laborers and slaves. Proponents of this social theory would place the farmer in the lowest level because they only see the world as those who have capital and those who must work for it. Abraham Lincoln denied that this theory had any merit. Lincoln says those who espouse this theory don’t recognize that there are people outside labor for hire or slaves. He said only look at the free laborer in the United States like the farmer. The free laborer must be both good with his hands and his mind. That’s why, Lincoln said, education is so important. Through cultivated thought and hard labor, the farmer finds both profit and pleasure in what he does. Lincoln said, “I know nothing so pleasant to the mind, as the discovery of anything which is at once new and valuable – nothing that so lightens and sweetens toil, as the hopeful pursuit of such discovery.” The spot where Lincoln gave his speech is located on the corner of 13th and Wells near Marquette University’s Schroeder Hall

The Wisconsin State Fair in 1859 was located in Milwaukee where the Wisconsin Agricultural Society drew thousands of people to the city to look at the exhibits of produce and livestock. The keynote speaker for the fair was none other than Abraham Lincoln, the future president of the United States. 
	During his speech, Abraham Lincoln spoke against the proslavery "mudsill" theory, which asserted that farmers and laborers would always remain on the bottom floor of society. Proponents of the mudsill theory, like South Carolina Senator James H. Hammond, held that the people who control capital will also be above labor for hire or slaves. Proponents of this theory placed free workers in the same class with enslaved people but Lincoln argued that this theory didn't make sense. A farmer is a free laborer, he says, who works with both his hands and his mind. Education is therefore key to keeping up with technological innovations and new techniques in farming, something that the mudsill theory dismisses. The spot where he gave the speech is commemorated with a plaque at the corner of 13th and Wells outside Marquette’s Schroeder Hall.

Walter
Schroeder Hall, Marquette’s primary sophomore residence hall, has served the
University since it opened in 1958. Schroeder Hall was the product of a
building boom financed by a surge of cash from a combination of government
funding and persistent private appeals. This development period—afforded by new
sources of capital—also included construction of O’Donnell Hall, which still
operates as a dorm for men and women.&nbsp; 

Walter
Schroeder, the Hall’s namesake, was a dedicated philanthropist and owned a
large string of hotels in the state including the Astor Hotel in Milwaukee. As
a member of the Board of Trustees, he brought with him valuable experience in
the field of building and property management. He also assisted with soliciting
additional private donations for the University. Furthermore, he supported
several other Milwaukee institutions such as the YMCA and the Milwaukee School
of Engineering.&nbsp; 

Traditionally,
the role of the University president had been that of overseeing internal
challenges. However, Fr. Edward O’Donell spent his tenure redefining the role
of university president and set out to raise
capital and support across the country. Marquette, which typically relied on
student tuition for their budget, began to be able to afford new luxuries
thanks to an increase in private donations of the kind Schroeder provided.
Armed with more resources, the University began expanding. Needing to
accommodate more students, especially after the war, mass building was
undertaken. In early 1954, the University acquired real estate on Thirteenth
and Wells and broke ground on the new facility in April of 1956. Originally,
this plot of land contained to two businesses and two homes—which were
demolished to make room for the new residence Hall. Now, the transition from
residential community to University grounds was becoming more complete—a
distinct campus was becoming visible.&nbsp; 

The
Hall first served as an all-male dorm and could accommodate 606 residents in
its eight stories. It is worth noting, that the hall was at the time the
largest building on campus. Each floor was—and still is—split between a North
and South wing with twenty double occupation rooms on each side. Each floor
possessed elevators and a communal bathroom as well as a lounge area that could
be used for recreation. The first floor of the building contains a small chapel
and a cafeteria. The basement was designed for recreation and entertainment as
well as storage. The dorm was expanded
in 1964 to accommodate an extra 160 students and to fit city zoning regulation. 

In
1972, to ease the shortage of women dorm accommodations, Schroeder Hall became
coed. The fifth, seventh, and ninth floors were converted to women's rooms. In the early 1990s, the dorm needed renovations and updates to
modernize the building. These renovations cut down the number of students of
the dorm to build more space for communal study/recreation area, implemented
more electrical outlets, and refurbished the whole building. Furthermore, the
lobby was redone, and study lounges were built into the floors.

Schroeder Hall has operated as one of Marquette's residence halls for over half a century. The facility takes its name from Walter Schroeder, who was a patron of the University and a member of the Board of Trustees, as well as a successful hotel owner in Wisconsin.

Brooks
Memorial Union

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Brooks
Memorial Union was named after The Very Reverend Peter A. Brooks a native of Watertown,
Wisconsin, and an alumnus of the university. He was a veteran of the First
World War who entered the Society of Jesus in 1921. After serving as Provincial
for the Missouri Province (which included Wisconsin), he became Rector and President
of Marquette University in 1944.&nbsp; 

By the 1940s the original
Marquette student union had stood for over three decades, and many began to see
it as an outdated building. Following a 1945 trip to the dedication of a new
student union at the University of Wisconsin, a delegation of Marquette
University administrators began to push for the construction of a new student
union. By 1948 an official campaign was launched to raise funding for the new
union. Despite the enthusiasm for the campaign, it faced two complications
almost immediately after it began. First on May 16, 1948, University President Rev.
Peter Brooks, SJ, died suddenly of a heart attack. Brooks himself had
spearheaded a campaign to construct the university’s first student union as a
student in 1920, and was a firm supporter of the campaign from the start.
Second, by the start of 1951 the campaign had only raised $106,000 of the
nearly $800,000 needed. Finances were further hampered by a nationwide steel
shortage that hiked the cost of the project up to nearly $1.5 million. This
problems resulted in the Marquette Union organization dissolving and its assets
being absorbed by the university. Nevertheless, construction continued. The new
union was designated the Father Peter A. Brooks Memorial Union and officially
opened on April 7, 1953.

Throughout its
thirty-seven years of existence the Brooks Memorial Union served as a focal
point of student activity and the site of a number of non-university events.
Among the more notable occurrences was the visit of Governor Nelson Rockefeller
in December, 1959, during the Republican Presidential Primaries. After he
finished speaking, Rockefeller came under intense questioning over the issue of
his support for the dissemination of information regarding birth control abroad.
The early 1960s saw a large amount of activity from members of the newly formed
Peace Corps centered at the union. One specific instance came in 1963, when the
Deputy Director Bill D. Moyers of the Peace Corp visited Marquette and heralded
the university as the leading university for student involvement in the Peace
Corps. By the mid to late-1960s student activity at the union began to turn
very political as it, along with O’Hara Hall, became the two centers for
demonstrations. By far the most notable instance occurred in the wake of the
assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968. On May 8, nearly 200
Marquette students barricaded the doors of the union from the outside, trapping
over 400 members of the university faculty and staff inside as they gathered
for the annual Pere Marquette Dinner. Ultimately the Milwaukee Police were
called in and they arrested two students for their part in the incident. This
in turn sparked another demonstration that night as over 100 student protestors
gathered in the union’s grill threatening to stay until the police released the
two students, which they did not.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While
the Brooks Memorial Union continued to serve the university in multiple capacities
throughout the 1960s and 1970s, by the late-1980s many begun to believe that
the building itself had outlived its usefulness. Thus many pushed for the
construction of a new student union at the former location of the Plankinton
Mansion. The campaign’s efforts were aided greatly by an anonymous donation of
nearly half the necessary funds for the construction of the new union.
Construction began on April 7, 1989, exactly thirty-six years after the Brooks
Memorial Union opened its doors. The new Alumni Memorial Union was completed in
mid-1990, and the building was officially dedicated on October 6. The Brooks
Memorial Union continued to stand until 2001, when it was razed as part of the
construction of the new Raynor Library.

The Peter A. Brooks Memorial Union stood from 1953 until 2001. The building served as the second student union for Marquette University and was named after former University President The Very Reverend Peter A. Brooks. While the building ceased all operations in 1990, it continued to stand until it was demolished in 2001. Today the former location of the union is home to Marquette's Raynor Library.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; One
of the major issues that evoked numerous demonstrations throughout the 1960s
and 1970s was that of racial equality and justice. In March 1964 around 700
Marquette students and faculty members gathered outside of Schroeder Hall as
they prepared to march with students from UWM to protest in front of the county
courthouse to protest the ongoing violence in Selma, Alabama. In 1965 members
of the newly formed group Students United for Racial Equality (SURE) organized
multiple demonstrations that resulted in the arrest of three students for
obstruction of traffic. Early the following year 200 members of SURE and other
allied organizations gathered outside the Eagle’s Club building on 24th
street and Wisconsin Avenue to protest during the Carnival Dance, while other
members attempted a sit-in within the student union. The university had rented
a ballroom from the Eagle’s Club, an organization that allowed for
‘”Caucasian-only membership”. SURE’s demonstrations began to heat up by 1968 as
they organized a march to O’Hara Hall (11th Street). Among their
demands were more scholarships for Black students, more classes on Black
culture, and a greater amount of local community outreach programs. Some
members even partook in a Lenten fast, consuming only bread, tea, and water for
the duration of the fast. Their efforts became even greater following the
assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on April 4th. This
sparked an uptick in demonstrations on campus which culminated on May 8th
with an incident at the Brooks Memorial Union where 200 students barricaded the
doors of the union, trapping over 400 members of the faculty and staff from
leaving the Pere Marquette dinner being held inside. When the police arrived to
the union, two students were arrested and the barricades were removed. However,
later that night 100 demonstrators gathered in the union and refused to leave
until the two arrested students were released. Though protests on the issue of
racial justice continued into the 1970s and beyond, they never reached the
point they had in May of 1968, thanks in part to Father Raynor’s authorization
of a special committee that focused on how to alleviate and resolve racial
issues.

The rich history of diversity within both Marquette University and Milwaukee itself has had a profound impact on the university, especially in the 1960s. Many students paid very close attention to the Civil Rights marches of the time, and themselves often gathered to protest the marginalization of African Americans. Most activity on Marquette's campus was spearheaded by the organization Students United for Racial Equality (SURE). Specific issues that students protested over were greater inclusion for minorities within the university and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One notable demonstration in the push for Civil Rights involved student protesters locking university faculty in the Brooks Memorial Union. While issues involving Civil Rights are still very much an area of focus in the university, there's no doubt that the 1960s were a high-point in demonstrations on Marquette's campus.

In the 1870s and 1880s, what
was once Spring Street and would later become Wisconsin Avenue was transformed
into Grand Avenue thanks to a number of mansions built there by the Milwaukee
social and economic elite. Three of these mansions belonged to John Plankinton,
a leader in the meatpacking industry in Milwaukee. The Estate consisted of land
located between 15th and 16th Streets and between Grand and
Clybour Avenues. In 1918, the entire estate was bought by Marquette, which used
the land to construct a number of new buildings: the Old Gymnasium (1922) Cramer
Hall (1933) home to College of Health Scienes, and Haggerty Hall (1941), the
home of the College of Engineering. The John and William Plankinton
Mansions&nbsp; housed various academic
departments and clinics, while Elizabeth’s mansion was leased the Knights of
Columbus, who used it as a clubhouse. However, due to the cost of upkeep and
the need for better, more modern buildings, the William and John Plankinton
mansions were demolished in the early 1970s. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Elizabeth Plankinton mansion was the last to be
demolished. Seeing it as valuable part of Milwaukee's history, organizations
like the Wisconsin Heritages, Inc., students and alumni of Marquette, concerned
citizens Milwaukee began to campaign for the preservation of the venerable
mansion. When the lease for the mansion was up in 1978, they successfully
delayed the demolition while they tried to find donors to save the mansion.
However, as the October, 1980, deadline loomed and preservationists made a
last-ditch effort, Marquette began to demolish the mansion several days before
it was scheduled to be torn down. This was seen by some as a dirty way to keep
the public and city council from finding a last ditch effort to save the
mansion even though it was a forgone conclusion at that time. A decade later, the
Alumni Memorial Union was erected in its place.

The land and mansions of the Plankinton Estate were crucial to the development of the current campus of Marquette University. Marquette bought the three mansions belonging to John Plankinton, a leader of the meatpacking industry in Milwaukee, in 1918. The two mansions previously used by John and his son William were used for various academic purposes for several decades, while the Knights of Columbus used the mansion that was the former of John’s daughter, Elizabeth Plankinton, as a clubhouse. 
	Elizabeth Plankinton's mansion was the last remaining piece of the Plankinton Estate, but it was demolished in October 1980 to create more space for the university. Many organizations and people fought to keep the mansion as a monument to the history of Grand Avenue, but in the end it proved to be fruitless. Today the Alumni Memorial Union stands where the mansion once stood.


The Plankinton Estate

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In
1964 Marquette University began a series of initiatives intending to vastly
increase student housing on campus. The three part project included a two-story
addition to Schroeder Hall, the purchase and subsequent renovation of Cobeen
Hall, and the acquisition of an L-shaped piece of land near the corner of
Sixteenth Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The plan for this new property was to
develop a twelve-story, all-boys dormitory. However, the L-shaped land was not
sufficient for the planned dorm, thus the university had to purchase and
demolish the adjacent Louisiana Apartments. Construction of the new dormitory,
then known as Dormitory #1 began in 1966. By the time the first six floors of the
building were complete, and students began moving in. At the same time the
university received a gift of $2.5 million from alumnus Victor McCormick. Upon
completion of the final six floors, the university renamed the dorm McCormick
Hall, and the dedication of the building took place on March 3rd,
1968.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Victor
McCormick graduated from Marquette University’s Law School in 1922. Following
graduation, McCormick began his career as a successful lawyer based in Green
Bay. In addition, McCormick made a fortune from investments in the Procter
&amp; Gamble Corporation. A long-time patron of education, in addition to his
$2.5 million gift to Marquette, McCormick also donated over $1 million to St.
Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. In 1969, Marquette President Father
O’Donnell named McCormick to the university’s Board of Trustees. McCormick
served on the board until a debilitating heart attack forced him to retire in
1976.

Built by Marquette University in 1966, McCormick Hall is home to over 700 first year students. The distinct architectural style has made McCormick Hall an icon of the university's campus for some 50 years. The building is named after Marquette University Law School alumnus Victor McCormick. In 2016 it was announced that the university plans to demolish the dorm around 2018.

new gymnasium on Clybourn Street, which was widely praised by the student body.
The basketball team had been playing at the gym behind Holy Names Church near
the old campus at 10th and State, but the building was poorly
maintained and the student body lost interest in attending games. The new
gymnasium brought the Marquette basketball team to the university’s campus. It
also helped unify the student body, which didn’t have to travel far from campus
to watch a basketball game again. The Old Gym wasn’t just built for athletic
purposes; it was built to also host events for the student body. It hosted the
first general convocation in Marquette’s history on November 22, 1922, and
became the site for Marquette’s prom, which was the most important social event
during the 1920s. During the time before digitalized registration, Marquette
students would line up in the Old Gym to register for classes. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
Marquette basketball team used the Old Gym for games and practice. This changed
in 1956 when they moved to the Milwaukee Arena (now Panther Arena) for games.
They continued to use the Old Gym for practice. Al McGuire’s basketball team
practiced here during their rise to national prominence in the 1970s, including
the 1977 national championship. In 2003, the basketball team moved its
practices to the new Al McGuire Center, leaving the Old Gym to host the other
sports teams, including men’s and women’s soccer, tennis, and track and field,
and men’s golf. 

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
Army and Naval ROTC departments of Marquette University are located in the Old
Gym’s east and west wings, respectively. In 1954, the west wing received a
second story to accommodate Naval ROTC while the east wing received one shortly
afterwards for Army ROTC.

Marquette University’s Old Gym, located at 1532 W. Clybourn Street, was built in 1922 to accommodate the large student body and a serious intercollegiate sports program. The Marquette University basketball team used the Old Gym for both practice and games until 1956, after which it was used only for practice. Today the Old Gym is home to several Marquette University sports teams including men’s and women’s tennis and track and field. Marquette University’s Army and Naval ROTC departments are located in the east and west wings.

On October 6, 2009, Marquette University dedicated a six and one half foot bronze statue of Saint Teresa of Calcutta on a site just a short distance from the Joan of Arc Chapel. The statue was crafted by Calcutta-born sculptor Guatam Pal, an international artist whose statues of Mahatma Gandhi adorn the parks of many cities worldwide (Including one at MacArthur Park, just east of the Milwaukee Courthouse). The statue was donated to the university by Vincent Kuttemperoor (CEO and President of VK Development, a real estate development firm based in Brookfield, Wisconsin) and his wife Geeta. Next to the statue is a plaque that features the following quote by St. Teresa: “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” The plaque also lists the many accomplishments and accolades of St. Teresa, including the Pere Marquette Discovery Award, which was awarded to her when she visited the university in 1981. Mother Teresa’s visit was part of the university’s centennial celebration. Although it took three years to convince Mother Teresa to accept the award, she finally agreed. The ceremony occurred on June 13, 1981, in front of a crowd of 10,000 people at the Milwaukee Auditorium. An additional 3,000 watched on closed-circuit television. During the ceremony, Father John Raynor, president of Marquette, gave a testament to the achievements of Mother Teresa. “Through her life and example, people of every country in the world have discovered that the light of God shines again in our time. She has discovered God in the poorest of the poor. Like Père Marquette, she does indeed map the unknown regions of man’s need to give and receive Christ’s own charity.” In keeping with her humble nature Mother Teresa accepted the award not on behalf of herself, but rather “the poor, the unworthy, the forgotten.” Beginning in 1997, the Roman Catholic Church began the process of canonization and named Mother Teresa a saint on September 4th, 2016.Other recipients of the Pere Marquette Discovery Award include the crew of the Apollo 11 (Awarded in 1969), Reverend Karl Rahner (1979), The Most Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu (2003), and the members of the Little Rock Nine (2010).

Dedicated in 2009, this six-foot statue of Mother Teresa of Calcutta adorns Marquette University's campus. In recognition of her numerous good deeds worldwide, Mother Teresa was awarded the Pere Marquette Discovery Award in 1981. She visited the university that same year to accept the award in person. During the ceremony, she spoke in front of some 10,000 people, and thousands more watched on local access television.
