The museum's former home was constructed by Revolutionary War veterans in 1783 and known to locals as "the Old Hundred" owing to its use as a hardware store for the building's first century.

The museum was located in this historic structure, which was built by two Revolutionary War officers in 1783.

Founded in 1964 by philanthropist Larry Aldrich, this museum holds one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the region. For most of its history, the museum was located downtown in the "Old Hundred" building which Aldrich purchased in 1964 for the purpose of opening a museum. In 2004, the museum moved to this location, a 17,000 square foot facility that includes classrooms and a studio in addition to two floors of gallery spaces and a sculpture garden.

The Stamford Museum was founded in 1936 by Dr. G.R.R.
Hertzberg, a prominent Stamford surgeon, to provide educational and cultural
services to the community.&nbsp; The Museum
was located in downtown Stamford and concentrated on natural history.&nbsp; In 1939, the museum was incorporated under a
State Charter signed by Governor Baldwin.&nbsp;
The rapid growth of collections and visitation forced the museum to move
in 1945 into the Weber Estate carriage house located on eight acres of land in
Cortland Park. The museum's first planetarium, “zoo” and barnyard; as well as
the Junior Curator program, the art, astronomy and natural science classes all
originated at the Cortland Park location.&nbsp;
Construction of the Connecticut turnpike in the 1950s, forced the Museum
to relocate again.&nbsp; After a successful
fund-raising campaign, the Stamford Museum moved in 1955 to the former estate
of department store founder Henri Bendel; at which time the name was changed to
the Stamford Museum &amp; Nature Center.

Mid-century development included significant donations to
the fine art collection, notable a large collection of works by Gutzon Borglum,
&nbsp;and expansion of outdoor features and
facilities, including the construction of the Overbrook Nature Center, the
Stamford Observatory, the Ezio Pinza Theatre and the reconstruction of an 18th
century Cheshire Barn on the farm.&nbsp;
Seasonal festivals were introduced.&nbsp;
Art and dance classes were held in the Studio building and hundreds of
local artists exhibited in the ART-X Gallery.&nbsp;
1985, construction of a new museum wing on the Bendel mansion expanded
gallery space and created a state of the art collections storage facility and
exhibition workshop. Diverse programs and exhibitions related to science, art,
cultural and natural history continued to be a priority through the turn of the
21st century.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

The museum's current complex covers&nbsp;118-acres anchored by the&nbsp;Stamford Museum with its 3,000 square feet of exhibition galleries and&nbsp;50-seat planetarium. The complex also features the&nbsp;Overbrook Nature Center- a visitor orientation resource featuring live animal
exhibits and&nbsp;Heckscher Farm, an 18-acre working farm with
heritage breeds and organic garden; Art, Nature &amp; Me, a state-licensed
pre-school;&nbsp; the Stamford Observatory,
with a 22” research telescope; Heckscher Wild,: an exhibition of the world’s
biomes featuring live animals; &nbsp;a
National Weather Bureau Cooperative Weather Station;&nbsp; Nature's Playground, and an 80-acre
interpretive woodland trail system, including the Wheels in the Woods
universally-accessible trail.&nbsp; SM&amp;NC
maintains a permanent collection of nearly 20,000 works of art, artifacts,
specimens, and live animals.

Stamford Museum & Nature Center

Robert Moffat Bruce amassed a sizable fortune as a merchant of textiles and as a speculator and investor. He purchased this mansion in 1858 from historian and attorney Francis Lister Hawks and donated it to the town of Greenwich in 1908. The mansion was completely renovated in the early 1990s and the museum holds a collection of over 15,000 objects.&nbsp;

The history of this museum dates back to 1908, when Robert Moffat Bruce donated his mansion to the leaders of Greenwich to be used as a history, science, and art museum. The museum opened with its first exhibit at the Bruce mansion four years later. Today, the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science offers a number of exhibits dedicated to archaeology, natural history, art, and the history of Native American tribes and early inhabitants of the city of Greenwich and surrounding communities.

The Housatonic Museum of Art was founded in 1967 by iconic artist, professor of art and art history, and chairman of Housatonic’s art department, Burt Chernow. Backed by a strong dedication towards presenting, preserving, and interpreting objects of artistic and historic value, Chernow gathered gifts from artists, private collectors, commercial galleries, and others to build a compelling and multifaceted collection. Since Robin Zella took over the role of director in the late 1990s, the museum has hosted a myriad of exciting exhibitions passing through the museum’s doors.1&nbsp;The first exhibition, in 1998, showcased a collection of Sol LeWitt works titled, Forms Derived From a Cube. Ansel Adam’s revolutionary Classic Images exhibition rolled through the HMA in 2001, and in 2014, David Hayes’s exhibition, Modern Master of American Abstraction, gave visitors a fresh insight into the role of American abstract artists and pieces. HMA currently contains over 4,000 works of art including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and other mediums.&nbsp;2
Locals, students, and tourists should always check to see what museum events are available when visiting. Sponsored by the HMA and often in collaboration with other organizations, most of these events remain free to the public and encourage interaction, study, and art appreciation courses. For example, HMA hosted the renowned Draw On! Program, which showcases Housatonic students drawing visual images on the Cafeteria walls in the Lafayette Hall. Past events included lectures and workshops with graphic designers, live poetry readings, Black history month celebrations, and even inflatable-suit bicycle rides.&nbsp;
Furthermore, HMA often partners with local businesses and other institutions to present both students and the public with educational experiences through art. The education programs at HMA typically features a lecture series that coincide with upcoming or current gallery exhibitions, though visitors can also ask about the Werth Family Foundation Student Docent Program, Writing About Art, and the Ansel Adams: Classic Images programs.&nbsp;3

The Housatonic Museum of Art (HMA) stands as one of the premier college art collections in the United States. Scattered throughout the Housatonic Community College Campus and located within the university’s Lafayette Hall, the free and permanent collections at this museum traverse centuries and art forms to enhance the cultural life of Bridgeport students and residents. While strolling through the campus hallways, visitors are greeted with 18th, 19th, and 20th century works of art, as well as ethnographic objects from Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. These collections are quite unique to the Housatonic campus, and permanent exhibitions remain on continuous display throughout the 300,000 square-foot facility. Within the permanent collection, visitors can view and interact over 4,000 works of art from various time periods, and some of the most famous artists featured at this museum include Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Ansel Adams, Klimt, and many others. The Burt Chernow Gallery, named after the museum’s founder, offers rotating exhibitions every six weeks that feature national, regional, and even local artists as well as art shows. 

Housatonic Museum of Art

The Yale Center for British Art dates back to founder Paul Mellon, who was a student at Yale University with the Class of 1929. As a co-heir to the Mellon Bank fortune and a strong supporter of humanities and liberal education, Mellon gave several gifts from his British art collection to the university in 1966, along with an endowment for operations and funds to build the gallery structure.&nbsp;After Mellon’s donations, the university contacted the highly acclaimed architect Louis I. Kahn to design the structure on Yale’s campus. The building was completed in 1974 and the museum first opened to the public in 1977. However, because of Kahn’s designs that included matte steel and reflective glass as well as a geometrical four-floor interior, the Yale Center for British Art building draws thousands of prospective architects from all over the world for both study and admiration. In fact, the Center&nbsp;was awarded the Twenty-Five Year Award by the American Institute of Architects in 2005.1
Collections at the Yale Center for British Art 
Aside from the building, the Yale Center for British Art is most well-known for its variety of exhibits, collections, and individual works from famous artists. Some of the works available for viewing include masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, Joshua Reynolds, and J.M.W. Turner, as well as many other artists from Europe and America who lived in Britain.&nbsp;Literary enthusiasts also hold the Yale Center for British Art in high esteem due to its rare book collection, which includes monumental works from the 16th century and onwards. Within the collection of 35,000 rare books and manuscripts, visitors and researchers alike can discover original pieces from&nbsp;the J.R. Abbey collection of color-plate books as well as&nbsp;early maps and atlases, private press and contemporary artist books, and even sporting materials.2The education staff in the gallery works with local teachers to supplement their classroom curriculums with access to works of art, and the Student Guide Program allows select students to conduct specially devised tours of the collections on Saturdays and Sundays. Other academic resources include the Reference Library and Archives, conservation laboratories, an online catalogue of various collections, and even a study room specially created to give students an opportunity to examine works on paper as well as rare books and manuscripts.3 &nbsp;

Some past exhibitions at the gallery include Francis Bacon and the Art of the Past, Art in Focus: Wales, and&nbsp;British Art at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century. Additionally, students and the general public are welcome to attend various lecture series, such as The Closed: From Pandora's Box to Damien Hirst. The Yale Center of British Art, located in the picturesque Yale University campus, carries the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside of the United Kingdom, and since its doors opened in 1977, this massive art gallery houses more than 2,000 paintings and over 200 sculptures reflecting the development of British art and society. From the Elizabethan period and onward, the multifaceted collection at the Yale Center for British Art emphasizes the preservation of art and culture, and in addition to the painting and sculpture collection, visitors can experience more than 20,000 drawings and watercolors, 30,000 prints, 35,000 rare books and manuscripts, and a reference library and archive featuring more than 30,000 volumes that aid in British art research and other related fields. 

Yale Center for British Art

With Trumbull’s 1832 donation of over 100 paintings detailing his experiences with and showcasing images of the American Revolutionary War, the Yale University Art Gallery was founded in Yale College’s Old Campus. Unfortunately, many parts of the Old Campus, including the art gallery, were destroyed in 1909, and the collections in the art gallery were featured throughout the Yale campus and in the older Tuscan romanesque building that was built in 1928 by Egerton Swartwout. In 1953, Yale professor and famed architect Louis Kahn designed the Gallery’s Main Building, which stood as Kahn’s first major project.Architecture The High Street Bridge connects Street Hall with the Old Yale Art Gallery. These connected buildings, along with the Louis Kahn Building, comprise the Yale University Art Gallery. Street Hall dates to 1866 and was designed by Peter Bonnett Wight to house the Yale School of the Fine Arts. It was named for Augustus Russell Street (Yale BA 1812), who donated money for the School's establishment provided that all New Haven inhabitants, both women and men, could attend. Its neo-Gothic aesthetic draws inspiration from 13th-century Venetian architecture. The Old Yale Art Gallery building was constructed between 1926 and 1928 under the direction of architect Egerton Swartwout (Yale BA 1891). His design is reminiscent of Florentine buildings, such as Palazzo Davanzati (built in the 14th century) and the Bargello (built in the 13th century and renovated in the 14th and 15th). Swartout also designed the bridge over High Street. It features four reliefs of winged women, who symbolize Architecture, Drama, Painting, and Sculpture.&nbsp;
Collections at the Yale University Art Gallery 
Art enthusiasts, students, professors, and the general public often flock to the Yale University Art Gallery for many reasons, including its free admission to the public, a vast permanent collection that requires multiple visits to completely absorb, and plentiful outdoor spaces for relaxation. However, the museum’s fame comes, in part,&nbsp;from Gogh’s The Night Café, which draws thousands of visitors looking to see the original of this priceless painting.&nbsp;The permanent collection at the gallery includes over 1,000 objects of metal, ivory, and wood within the African Art section; over 2,500 paintings and 500 sculptures from revered American artists; over 13,000 artifacts dated from the Neolithic to the early Byzantine eras and coming from the Near East, Greece, and Rome; and other galleries that include American Decorative Arts, Asian Art, Coins and Medals, Modern and Contemporary Art, Early European Art, and many others. The Modern and Contemporary Art gallery features works by household names such as Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, and Roy Lichtenstein.&nbsp;
Educational Programs Available 
To help the general public and Yale students engage with the museum’s offerings, the Yale University Art Gallery hosts and sponsors several programs and teaching resources throughout the year. In fact, these programs are directed towards visitors of all ages, and include lectures, panel discussions, artist talks, master classes, and other thought-provoking events. Children and K-12 educators can also take part in events such as Family Day, the Stories and Art activity held on the second Sunday of every month, or take a guided class visit. Furthermore, after-school programming is available to community groups, schools, and families.

The Yale University Art Gallery carries the proud role of being the oldest university art museum in the Western Hemisphere, and with a history that dates back to 1832 along with its 69,975 square-feet main building, this museum is a central hub for art enthusiasts, students, and the general public. The museum’s permanent exhibitions were founded in 1832 when the iconic artist and patriot John Trumbull gave Yale College more than 100 of his own paintings. Since this monumental donation, the museum has acquired more than 200,000 objects representing both Eastern and Western cultures, ranging in date from antiquity to the present day. In addition to the museum’s goal to encourage art appreciation and understanding, the Yale University Art Gallery also seeks to stimulate research and active learning about art through compelling exhibitions and educational programs. Some of the most acclaimed works of original art found at this museum include Van Gogh’s The Night Café, Robert Field’s Miniature of George Washington, and Trumbull’s The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec. 

Yale University Art Gallery

Florence Griswold, known commonly as Miss Florence, inherited her family's New England home in the late 1890s. The house had already been used as a boardinghouse prior to this, but the arrival of artist Henry Ward Ranger changed the tides for Miss Florence and her house.Having recently returned from Europe, Ranger sought to recreate the artist colonies he had encountered in France. Due to the Georgian-style house's central location to both Boston and New York, as well as the picturesque scenery surrounding the house, Ranger found Miss Florence's place the perfect location for this. Soon, the Lyme Artist Colony was the most famous Impressionist artist colony in the country. It remained successful and thriving for over thirty years.Today, The Florence Griswold Museum is an incredible site housing not only Impressionist artwork but also showcasing the history of the property and the Lyme Artist Colony.

The Florence Griswold Museum is an art museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut centered around the family home of Florence Griswold. The home was used as a boardinghouse and in 1899 welcomed artist Henry Ward Ranger. Griswold's home soon blossomed into the most famous Impressionist artists' colony in the country. The Lyme Art Colony flourished for over thirty years.

Florence Griswold Museum

The museum is named for Harriet Allyn's&nbsp;father Captain Lyman Allyn (1797-1874), who commanded a whaling boat before getting involved in banking, insurance, and the railroad industry. Harriet Allyn's will provided funds for the museum, as well as a park and a donation of land to Connecticut College. On permanent display is the&nbsp;American Perspectives&nbsp;exhibit, which showcases 18th-20th-century paintings, sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts, arranged by chronology, region, and theme. For instance, the exhibit includes a robust collection of Connecticut Impressionist works, as well as an impressive&nbsp;collection of pieces relating to New London's maritime history. The museum also has a collection of toys, many of which are displayed inside an American Victorian Dollhouse, built for the museum in 1962.&nbsp;

Lyman Allyn Art Museum was founded by the bequest of Harriet Upson Allyn, a New London resident, in 1926. It is housed in a neo-classical granite building designed by Charles A. Platt and opened in 1932 with an inaugural collection of just 13 works. Today, it has a permanent collection of more than 15,000 pieces, nine galleries, an auditorium, a conservation lab, and a library. Its focus is on 18th-20th-century American art.

Lyman Allyn Art Museum

The&nbsp;Romanesque Revival&nbsp;museum building was designed by Massachusetts architect&nbsp;Stephen C. Earle. Henry Watson Kent served as the museum's first curator. Exhibits drew on the Slater family's private collections, donations from Norwich citizens, and acquisitions by the museum itself. Kent coordinated a number of temporary exhibits, encouraging visitors to return multiple times. Permanent exhibits include: - The Plaster Cast Collection: replicas of notable ancient and Renaissance sculptures - A display on the Slaters' trip around the world on their yacht in 1894/95. - 20th-century Connecticut artists - Vanderpoel Gallery of Asian Art - Gallery of African Art - Norwich Galleries, containing art, artifacts, and documents from the region

Slater Memorial Museum is situated on the Norwich Free Academy Campus. It was founded in the late 19th century by William Albert Slater to honor his father, John Fox Slater, a wealthy industrialist. William Slater was an avid patron of the arts, who collected art and funded Norwich's "Broadway Theater." Museum holdings are diverse, spanning over 3 millennia and 5 continents.

Slater Memorial Museum

The Atheneum got its start with the Gothic Revival Wadsworth building, constructed between 1842 and 1844 on property belonging to Atheneum sponsor Daniel Wadsworth. When the Wadsworth "castle" opened, it housed not only an&nbsp;art gallery, but also the Connecticut Historical Society, the Young Men’s Institute (a precursor of the Hartford Public Library), and the Natural History Society, and in the 1864 added the Watkinson reference library. Today, the Atheneum's oldest building is actually used to exhibit some of its newest artifacts, with galleries dedicated to art from the 20th and 21st centuries. This building also houses the Amistad Center, which celebrates African-American art and culture.By the turn of the last century, the Wadsworth collection was growing too large to be housed in just one building, so the museum directors commissioned&nbsp;Benjamin Wistar Morris to designed the Tudor Revival Colt Memorial of 1910 and the Renaissance Revival Morgan Memorial of 1910-15 to supply&nbsp;more space. The Atheneum had struggled a bit during the 1880s, even being closed to the public between 1884 and 1886, Luckily, several "angels" stepped in to support the institution, and in the 1890s, the first of these, one J. Pierpont Morgan, sponsored some much-needed renovations. A later donation from Morgan, and a similar bequest from Elizabeth Colt (widow of arms maker Samuel), allowed for the construction of the buildings that bear their names. The Morgan building is used to house art works from ancient times up through the 19th century.In 1934, the Avery Memorial opened. It&nbsp;was the earliest museum building in the United States with a modern International Style interior. While the building's genesis was due to namesake donor Samuel P. Avery, Jr., whose father had founded the Metropilitan Museum of Art, its style may owe something to the Atheneum's director at the time.&nbsp; A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr. had a passion for modern interior design, and the dressing room he created for his wife in their unique home is one of the country's first International Style residential interiors. Today the Avery Memorial exhibits American art and decorative arts, the latter collection including a number of antique firearms donated by Elizabeth Colt. Chick Austin's house also now belongs to the museum, although it is not part of the main complex and is only open for limited tours a few times a month.In 1965 the Atheneum broke ground on its most recent addition, the&nbsp;late modernist Goodwin building. This was named after&nbsp;James Lippincott Goodwin, a prominent architect who had served as one of the museum's trustees before his death in 1958. The architects responsible for this structure were a local firm,&nbsp;Huntington, Darbee and Dollard. At the dawn of the millennium, this new building's future was suddenly in doubt. Plans for museum expansion circa 2000 called for demolishing it in order to construct a larger museum expansion. With a change in leadership, plans for any new construction were scrapped, along with plans for demolition. While much-needed renovations were put on hold for the time being, at least the Goodwin Building would be spared from the wrecking ball.In September 2015, the Wadsworth Atheneum finished a five year long&nbsp;$33 million renovation. This renovation put aside addition and expansion in favor of&nbsp;extensive repairs and upgrades to 32 galleries and 15 public spaces throughout the museum's five interconnected buildings. These renovations received wide press coverage and were met with high praise from media outlets including the Boston Globe, the Economist, the Wall Street Journbal, and the New York Times. The TImes, in particular, praised the Atheneum's renovations as a perfect example for how such things should be done, remaining true to the spirit of the museum's founders while ensuring that modern patrons' expectations are met.

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the oldest public art museum in the United States, was founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth, one of the first important American patrons of the arts.  Its collections include around 50,000 works of art produced over a 5,000-year time span. Visitors can enjoy the Morgan collection of Greek and Roman antiquities and European decorative arts; baroque and surrealist paintings; an acclaimed collection of Hudson River School landscapes; European and American Impressionist paintings; modernist masterpieces; the Serge Lifar collecton of Ballets Russes drawings and costumes; the George A. Gay collection of prints; the Wallace Nutting collection of American colonial furniture and decorative arts; the Samuel Colt firearms collection; costumes and textiles; African American art and artifacts; and contemporary art. Although Daniel Wadsworth at first planned to open “a Gallery of Fine Arts,” he was instead convinced to establish an “atheneum,” a cultural institution that included a library, works of art, artifacts, and a mission of promoting history, literature, art and science.

Wadsworth Atheneum

The New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) began as the New
Britain Institute. This program was established in 1853 for the purpose of
promoting education by a group of newly arrived immigrants working in the
cities factories. For close to fifty years the group rented spaces to host
meeting and programs, until in 1901 the New Britain Institute transferred more
permanently to a large building in town that was able house over 70,000
volumes. The new building also contained an art room that housed portraits of
prominent local and national figures. 

&nbsp;In 1903 the Chairman of the New Britain Institutes’ building
committee and previous mayor of New Britain, created the first purchase fund
for art to start their collections. For decades collections ranging from colonial
to contemporary works grew, and in 1928 Fanny J. Brown, the first curator at
the Institution began to expand it’s exhibition attempting to incorporate more modern
themes. Finally, in 1934 an endowment and mansion were left to the Institute by
a New Britain philanthropist, allowing the opening of the Art Museum of the New
Britain Institute in 1937.

&nbsp;The Museum now had appropriate space to expand, and they
continued to do so. Throughout the mid twentieth century, the Museum continued
to collect a wide range of American Art opening gallery space adorned with
these pieces. The institution was also devoted to giving local talent a chance
to exhibit some of their pieces through their exhibition program. Continued
success and growth caused the trustees to grant the Museum a separate identity
from the New Britain Institute. Thus, the New Britain Museum of American Art was
given it’s name.

&nbsp;Currently, the NBMAA are continuing to expand their collections
and now numbers 10,236 pieces, including oil paintings, prints, drawings,
sculptures, illustrations, and photographs. The Museum’s focus on providing a
contrast between art from different time periods differentiates it from
American Art Museums. Furthermore, they are dedicated to serving all people who
want to learn from their collections. The NBMAA’s mission is to become “one of
the nation’s most welcoming art museums” by creating hands on opportunities to
experience art while having a greater appreciation and knowledge of it. They
strive to by one of the nation’s most distinguished and dynamic art museums
with diverse exhibitions and accessible collections.&nbsp; Finally, their main goal is to educate. The
museum makes great efforts to serve the public as an excellent educational
institution that is effective in its’ purpose.

In the beginning of the 21st
century, the NBMAA transitioned into a new era as they made attempts to teach a
new generation to appreciate art history and the preservation of its’ history. Therefore,
the Museum began developing plans for its’ expansion, improved educational
programs for people of all ages, conservation, and building their endowment. Currently,
the Museum is housed in the new Chase Family Building and is one of the largest
museums in New England.&nbsp;

The New Britain museum of American Art has a history of growth, acceptance, success, and education that makes it one of a kind. New Britain Museum of American Art

The Mattatuck Museum dates back to 1877 and offers exhibits based on its extensive collection of works by Connecticut artists. The museum offered a variety of exhibits and sponsored events in its early decades and acquired an exhibit hall in 1912. Highlights of the museum include the collection of ten thousand miniature works donated by the Waterbury Button Company and works by Alexander Calder, Frederic Church, and Anni Albers. The museum is also home to the Max R. Traurig Library which offers 1500 volumes and is open by appointment.
