As the university grew following the post-war period, a greater emphasis was placed on the need for proper science facilities on campus. The result was Farr-Chinnock Hall, which was completed in 1951. The building boasted modern scientific labs and new offices for the the LMU faculty. With its completion, students completed studies in the physical sciences, chemistry, and physics. Until the completion and dedication of the new Math and Science in 2012, most LMU students completed their science studies in this building. Today, it is the home of J. Frank White Academy.

Farr-Chinnock Hall

The Lincoln Memorial University Historic Walking tour tells the stories of the buildings, landmarks, and alumni of the university's first half-century. The tour begins in the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum's parking lot, where visitors can see items owned by Lincoln and learn about the origins of the university that is committed to his memory. Over twenty stops can be explored. Along the way, you can see historic pictures, documents, and learn the stories of past alumni.

The establishment of Lincoln Memorial University proceeded along two distinct paths until February 12, 1897, when those paths converged. According to legend, a conversation in 1863 between Abraham Lincoln and Union General O.O. Howard is the spark that eventually brought the paths together. President Lincoln suggested that Howard establish a university for the people of the region sometime after the conclusion of the Civil War. Later, the first path toward the university’s establishment began when an English company sought to create a new community in the Appalachian Mountains. After purchasing a large tract of land in Harrogate, Tennessee, the company built a 700-room hotel, an inn, a hospital, a sanitarium, and other structures. The effort to build a community eventually failed. The second path began when a Congregationalist minister, A.A. Myers, built an elementary school for the region's children. When General Howard visited Myer’s school as part of a lecture series, he remembered his conversation with President Lincoln. Howard, Myers, and others assumed control of the abandoned property and established Lincoln Memorial University. The State of Tennessee chartered the school in 1897.1Artifacts related to President Lincoln began to be collected and donated early from the schools outset. A room in the Duke Hall of Citizenship was dedicated to displaying a few of these artifacts. In 1973, university administrators H.Y. Livesay and Dr. Frank G. Rankin led the effort to establish a permanent home for the Lincoln Collection. Thanks to a large contribution from Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Harland Sanders (a member of the Board of Trustees), enough funding was raised by 1974. The museum was completed in 1977.2Some of the artifacts stored by the museum include a cupboard that was made by Lincoln’s father; two Lincoln beds; and a locket of Lincoln's hair that was cut after the assignation at Ford’s Theatre. A large collection of Lincoln-themed artwork is among the museum’s exhibits, as is a wide range of Civil War firearms. Several dioramas are also on display. These were made in the 1930s and depict President Lincoln in many settings.3

Housing one of the nation’s largest collections of artifacts connected to Abraham Lincoln, the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum in Harrogate, Tennessee offers visitors an opportunity to connect with the sixteenth President of the United States. Located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, museum exhibits include many artifacts associated with Lincoln. One interesting item is the cane that Lincoln used during his visit to Ford's Theatre on the night of his assassination. The museum’s library contains a collection of about 30,000 books, pamphlets, photographs, and other written material. Instructional programs are offered to teachers and students.

The grounds of the Four Season Hotel contained beautiful gardens like the one that this wall would have contained, carriage roads, and trails through the mountains. The hotel closed one year after opening due to an economic depression that forced it into bankruptcy and later sold for salvage. Most of the construction of the American Association properties is distinguished by the white, rusticated limestone seen in this wall. Some of the older University structures and trees give evidence of this graceful beginning to Lincoln Memorial University. The 700-room Four Seasons hotel opened on April 12, 1891, with a ball and banquet. The goal of the hotel was a part of Arthur's larger plan to make nearby Middlesboro, Kentucky, "the Pittsburgh of the South" - much like Middlesboro would mimic Middlesboro, England, Harrogate, Tennessee would mimic the spa town of Harrogate, England. However, after the Panic of 1893, the Four Seasons Hotel was dismantled and disappeared from the landscape, leaving only the 200-room Sanatorium. In 1897, the Trustees of Lincoln Memorial University Purchased the property and Sanatorium, later to become Grant-Lee Hall.

This section of all is all that remains of a large limestone wall that was part of the pleasure gardens surrounding the Four Seasons Hotel in 1892. The hotel, part of the American Association development of Alexander Arthur, was built to cater to the world's rich and famous.

The cairn was placed thanks to the life savings of Henry Gaylord Buckingham, a country doctor from Clayton, New Jersey, and his wife, Elizabeth. It was gifted to the students of Lincoln Memorial University, to continue their "thirst for knowledge." The first Lincoln ancestor to arrive in the United States was Samuel Lincoln, who landed in Boston on June 20, 1637. The celebration also commemorated the passage of Abraham Lincoln's family through the Cumberland Gap in 1780. The Lincoln family eventually settled in Kentucky. Abraham Lincoln would later be born in Hardin County, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809.

This stone monument was built on the Lincoln Memorial University campus as part of the college's efforts to commemorate the Lincoln Tercentenary, a 1937 celebration of the first member of the Lincoln family to arrive in the United States three centuries prior.

The LMU sign was constructed in 1925 by Charlie J. Smith, a contractor from Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Smith also was in charge of constructing the Spring House and the Amphitheater in the summers of 1936 and 1937, respectively.

LMU Letters

The LMU President's Home actually combines two former buildings that have stood on Lincoln Memorial University's campus. The original President's Home did not include the pillars that now appear on the home. The pillars came from Norton Hall, a residence hall for girls that was built in 1912. It stood on the ground where the Museum exists today. Norton Hall stood on the campus until 1975. For many of those years, it also housed the university's dining facilities. The home was also briefly converted into an infirmary during the 1924 typhoid epidemic that struck the campus.&nbsp; The President's Home has served each LMU President since 1913. Variously through the years, it has served as both a living area for the current president and as university offices for the President and his/her staff.

The Lincoln Memorial University President's House was built in 1913, and was the gift of a donor. The pillars that now adorn the home were original to Norton Hall, a residence hall for girls that was built in 1912 and deconstructed in 1975.

Smith's sons): <blockquote>It was during the summer of 1936 that the Spring House was built in what is known as the bowl on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University. The Amphitheater was built near the Spring House in the summer of 1937. The builder was Charlie J. Smith, a contractor from Cumberland Gap. The Spring House was moved from the little village of Tiprell which is about two miles south o Cumberland Gap near the Southern Railway tracks. Mr. Smith tore down the Spring house at its location one stone at a time. He made a derrick from a poplar tree with rope pulleys to move the large stones and loaded them in a flatbed Ford truck provided by Mr. H.K. Ryder, foreman of construction at LMU. Mr. Smith with his eleven year old twin sons, Ben and Jimmy, usually walked from Cumberland Gap through the little tunnel to the LMU campus early every morning during the summer months of 1936 to work on reconstructing the Spring House. They followed the same routine in the summer of 1937 to reconstruct the Amphitheater which was also moved from Tiprell. The twins mixed the mortar in a six-foot-long box and carried the smaller stones in a wheelbarrow with a steel wheel while their father and Mr. Gordy Campbell, a mason from the Baccus community near Tazewell, patiently laid the stones in place. Mr. Campbell drove a 1932 A-model Ford automobile and the days that he worked he would drive Mr. Smith and the twins back to Cumberland Gap late in the evening. The hot summer days seemed long, but it was a pleasure to see lunchtime come when Mr. Smith and his sons would walk over to the "Hunk Stand" and have one of Mrs. Jones' delicious five-cent hamburgers with a five-cent six ounce Coca Cola and a fifteen-cent pint of Swifts Neapolitan ice cream. During the laying of the stones on the columnn to the right of the main entrance, Mr. Smith had a fall from the ten-foot scaffolding resulting in a torn shirt and a badly bruised shoulder; however, he climbed back up and started laying stone again. It was in that same columnn that Mr. Smith placed a letter signed by him and his sons which give the history of the building of the Spring House. The amphitheater also has a letter which was signed by Mr. smith and his sons placed in the electrical conduit of the right columnn giving the history of when it was built and by whom.&nbsp; The round stones on top of each columnn of the Spring House and the Amphitheater were chiseled by Mr. Smith from large limestones in the quarry near the big Louisville and Nashville Railroad tunnel under the Cumberland Gap. The Senior class of 1936, with Kluck U. Berkau as President, sponsored the building of the Spring House and the Senior class of 1937 along with Earl Hobson Smith, Associate Professor of English and Speech, sponsored the building of the Amphitheater. In 1925, a few years before building the Spring House and Amphitheater, Mr. Smith had built the concrete LMU letters which are so prominently in view as one drives by the beautiful campus of Lincoln Memorial University.</blockquote>

Originally located in Tiprell, Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University students moved the Spring House to the Lincoln Memorial University campus in the 1930s. A few years after moving the Spring House, LMU students once again moved stones from Tiprell to construct the adjacent amphitheater.

Beginning in 1950, ailing students could rest in one of the building's two wards, be examined by the in-house x-ray machine, and receive medicine from the dispensary. Later in its history, it would serve as the home to the university's Nursing Division. From there, it transitioned to the home for Alumni Services, Admissions, Institutional Research, and International Learning.

Kresge Hall began as Kresge Infirmary in 1950. Named after the Kresge Foundation of Detroit, the infirmary provided health care to the student population. Over the years, it has additionally served as university classrooms, offices, and as the home to Alumni Services.

During my trip last winter I heard of a large statue that was to be erected in the memory of Lincoln. And certainly I am going to try to be the fortunate one to get it. My trip ended with that terrible wave of heat that we had last June. I was in Kansas City then and the temperature was about a hundred degrees for several days, so I did not think it wise to proceed therefore I came back. Although my trip was not very successful financially, still I got some encouragement financially and otherwise to want to proceed next fall unless I get some work at home. It is nice to go around and hear of different things and meet different people and make new acquaintances. This is one of the things that I need most. 
In the past period of my career I have been fortunate enough to be kept busy, more or less, in a quiet way, and I did not strive for bigger things, being contended with what I had. Cartaino S. Paolo's "Lincoln the Lawyer" statue has looked out over campus since 1949. Dedicated at the 140th anniversary anniversary of the 16th President's birth, it drew a great deal of curiosity from beyond the region, as it was the first statue of Lincoln to be unveiled in the former Confederacy.

Made in the Italianate Georgian style, the Carnegie Library is similar to the over 1,000 other Carnegie libraries that was constructed in the same forty-year period. The following is a 1932 description of the building that appeared in the LMU publication&nbsp;The Blue and the Grey: <blockquote>What does the library mean to the students of LMU? Better say - how much the library can mean to the students of Lincoln Memorial University. Down stairs between the offices are shelves and shelves of books that are seldom noticed. There are old fiction books, poetry, history, geography, philosophy, and foreign language. Valuable - several thousand volumes. And in the Recreational Reading Room are all the fiction works. These books may be checked out for one week. There are always a number of interesting books on the display table. Along side the walls are low shelves on which are many valuable magazines - writers, mechanical, scientific, educational, dramatic, medical, musical and the entertaining kind. There are a number of daily papers, weekly papers, and county papers available at all times in the Reading Room. Downstairs and just outside the librarian's office are reserved books and manuscripts about Lincoln's life. Just at the top of the stairs, in glass cases, are displayed many relics of Lincoln's time - Confederate money, swords, knives, caps, and guns. These are rightfully of interest to everyone who comes to our library. Upstairs in the "business end" of the library. Here are the books on psychology, Bible, economics, agriculture, home economics, English and composition, drama, writing, American literature, English literature, philosophy, foreign language, travel, biography and history. Upstairs are the reference books, reader's guides, an encyclopedias. Dr. Hill has presented the Library the latest edition of the Britannica Encyclopedia. On the reserve shelves are several hundred books selected by the professors for use in their particular classes. These books may be checked out for overnight use only. On the display table, upstairs, are books for recreational study. These were presented by Judge Grossman of New York City.l The books have subject matter ranging from "Once There Was and Was Not" to "The Seven Seals of Science." Other new books are available on the table beside the U-desk. In the magazine room are filed those magazines worthy of preservation or those likely to be needed for reference work. Students are urged to make use of these magazines. Just ask the librarian at the desk for the magazine you want - be sure of the number or date. Many of the periodicals most in use have been bound and are on the shelves - these are considered as reserve books, but may not be taken from the library. On the bulletin board downstairs, the librarian posts from time to time; book reviews, biographical sketches, book covers, suggested reading courses, and book lists. All of these are valuable to the student. The bulletin board should receive the daily attention of everyone.</blockquote>

The original Carnegie Library was made possible by Andrew Carnegie, who put forward a twenty thousand dollar matching opportunity to Darwin R. James and O.O. Howard. Thirteen donors matched the offer, and in 1906 the library became the second building on campus to be constructed after the establishment of LMU (Avery Hall being the first).

After opening in 1948, the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium acquired a new addition in 1954. The Mary S. Annan Natatorium provided students and locals alike with the opportunity to swim in an enclosed area. Lessons in swimming and aerobics have been held here for well over half a century.&nbsp; The Gymnasium was long a popular location for LMU basketball games until the construction of Tex Turner Arena. Today, it still hosts recreational activities and is home to the volleyball team.

During WWII, Gen. George S. Patton prepared the 2nd Armored Division at a facility at Camp Forrest Air Force Base in Tullahoma, Tennessee. After the war, the facility moved to Harrogate, where it became the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium. The buildings was named after the mother of Sam Mars, Sr., who led fundraising efforts for the project.

The six family homes that once stood in Democrat Hollow disappeared as time moved forward. Eventually, the area was converted to recreational use. The Senior Class of 1956 was the first to build a recreational area. Over the years, Democrat Hollow has served as a popular bonfire spot, a Haunted Forest site, and a picnic area. In the new millennium, a High Adventure Area was added to Democrat Hollow. It includes a ropes course and a zipline.&nbsp;

Democrat Hollow originally was the home to Lincoln Memorial University's staff and their families. One theory suggests that the area received its name because the majority of the families who lived there belonged to the Democratic Party. Today, the area is a picnic and High Adventure Area for the University.

Democrat Hollow

Built along with the Four Seasons Hotel, Grant-Lee Hall began as a luxurious sanatorium that could house up to 200 guests. The sanitarium was not completely a hospital for potentially ill guests, however (indeed, only one person was supposedly ever treated for illness); it was the Victorian equivalent of a spa getaway. Guests could indulge in hot baths, utilize gymnastic equipment, or receive a relaxing massage. Unfortunately, the sluggish pace of visitor growth throughout 1892 was a sign of the bad times to come for the sanitarium. When financial difficulties hit during the Panic of 1893, the Four Seasons Hotel and its Sanitarium, a 20 million dollar investment, collapsed. The Four Seasons Hotel was demolished and dismantled for scrap, leaving only the sanitarium and grounds to be sold by the&nbsp;Columbia Finance and Trust Company of Louisville. Eventually, Lincoln Memorial University rose up from the remains. Grant-Lee Hall took its name from university founders who hoped that LMU would become "an expression of renewed good will and fraternal feeling" between what was once a divided nation. Board members had served in both the Union and Confederate armies. As such, some wanted to name the former sanitarium for one of the prominent generals from that war. Howard suggested that the two names come together, "joining hands."&nbsp; Now Grant-Lee Hall, the former sanitarium acted as housing for faculty. In 1904, however, the building burned to the ground after a massive fire swept through it. Workers had to sort through the rubble, with largely only the stone arches and base of building remaining. The building burned down again in 1950, giving birth to the story of "the Lady in Red." According to campus legend, a woman dressed in red signaled to the students that a fire was about to occur just before the flames began.&nbsp;

Originally the Four Seasons Hotel's luxurious Sanatorium, Grant-Lee Hall took its name from the Civil War's two most famous generals: Ulysses S Grant and Robert E. Lee. Over the years, it has burned down on two locations, been rebuilt, served as both student and faculty housing, and now serves as administrative offices.

In 1920, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Hall was dedicated as a boys dormitory. The residence hall was a $25,000 gift of the Tennessee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Over the years, it served as a residence hall, university classrooms, and the home to J. Frank White Academy. Today, it houses numerous university offices.

DAR-Whitford Hall

Numerous campus memories have been formed in Duke Hall. For many, this was the location of their university graduation, or a community performance. It has also welcomed several famous guests - on June 4, 1939, former president Herbert Hoover delivered the commencement address. After noting that his own past had "started from scratch," he declared, "Here at Lincoln Memorial University all of you have fought your own way to higher education." At the same time that Hoover visited, famed actor William Massey, who had recently portrayed Abraham Lincoln on both stage and in film, received the Lincoln Diploma of Honor. Massey's appearance with Hoover was a small coup for the university, as the national media covered the event. Duke Hall's auditorium was also the scene of patriotism and sorrow during WWII. Today, a plaque just inside the entrance commemorates LMU's WWII dead. Their names along with the location and dates of their death are as follows: Lt. A radio with sound amplification was set up on the stage. We sat in silence, and listened to a history-making event about which we could not fully comprehend. A few seats in front of me our Dean of the college sat with his white head bowed. After a while, I saw that he was sobbing and shaking. I felt a great sorrow or him, and was at a loss to understand his emotions... Many boys left the campus for service, and our enrollment dropped fast. We who were there experienced some grievous days when word came that one was missing or killed in action. Some of the local boys' funeral services were held in the same auditorium where they had heard the declaration of war. One afternoon some of us girls gathered at our dorm window when the college president's secretary was brought down from her office. She had just received word that her fiance, one of our fellow students, had been killed. We grieved for both of them. Our graduating class was small in 1943. The night before commencement some of us went up to a class building to find the old campus bell. Traditionally we tolled it once for each graduate, and went our way with sadness for our friends, those who would have graduated with us, classmates who were absent, those whom we had lost and those still in service. Graduation was not a particularly happy occasion&nbsp;at Lincoln Memorial University on that June day in 1943. </blockquote>

Benjamin N. Duke, of tobacco, textile, and energy fame, donated the funds to build Duke Hall, which was completed in 1928. It has variously housed classrooms, the university's Lincoln collection, religious services, convocations, offices, and a performance center.

Following the failure of the Four Seasons Hotel during the Panic of 1893, the property was sold. In 1897, Lincoln Memorial University opened on the site of the former hotel. Students constructed Avery Hall from the leftover foundation of its predecessor.

Built between 1902 and 1904 and located at the site of the grand but short-lived Four Seasons Hotel, Avery Hall became the first newly-constructed campus building of Lincoln Memorial University. The university was established in 1897 by former Union General Oliver Howard and  Reverend Arthur A. Myers. Avery Hall included dormitories and a dining hall in addition to classrooms and the campus library. The building remains a central feature of the university campus.

LaFrentz-Poole Hall takes its name in part from Dr. Ferdinand LaFrentz, a former president of the Board of Directors at Lincoln Memorial University. Popularly known as "LP," it has housed both men and women, although women were the only residents permitted inside the building in the earliest days of the dorm. All necessary repairs, replacements, or changes in room equipment must be reported to the matron. 11. Nothing must be dried in rooms except hose, handkerchiefs, and silk underwear. These must not be dried on the furniture or hung in the windows. 12. Food must be kept in metal or glass receptacles. 13. Windows and curtains must be kept clean. 14. Clothes must not be washed in the lavatories or the bathtubs. 15. Girls are not to exchange keys among themselves, but must return them to and receive them from the Matron. 16. girls may not occupy a room or move from one room to another without permission from the Matron. 17. No furniture is to be moved from its regular place in one room to another room without permission from the matron. 18. No furniture is to be dismantled in any way. 19. Dirt is not to be swept into the halls. 20. Trash is not to be deposited in the utility closet, but is to be taken to the trashcan on the back stairway. 21. The main lounge is never used for dancing. 22. No one is to keep in her room any cleaning equipment belonging to the hall. 23. Students are not allowed to take trunks to their rooms, but must have them taken immediately to the trunk room, where they are to be packed an unpacked. 24. No equipment belonging to the dormitory may be removed from it without permission from the Matron. </blockquote>E. LaFrentz-Poole hall was built in 1927. Throughout this time, it has continuously served as a residential building on Lincoln Memorial University's campus.

LaFrentz-Poole Hall

Those who sought a household management degree at LMU learned a number of skills. Cooking and caring for the home was on the list, as was childcare. A daycare for the university operated out of the home. Young women also studied sewing and other needle arts.&nbsp; When the home later transitioned to a residential dorm, students gathered in the front living area to watch tv and read books. Teas were also a popular pastime in Munson House, with young women gathering together to partake. Young men were not permitted inside of the building in the early days of residential living. Throughout its history, in fact, Munson House has been an all-female living area.

Built in 1941 from funds raised by the Nancy Hanks Club, Munson House was originally named the Muson Home Management House. It originally housed the campus's home economic department, but later served as a residential dorm and is now a sorority house.

Alexander Arthur's home, Craig Neuk, was a nod to both Arthur's British heritage and his hopes for developing the region. Craigneuk was a Scottish village that grew in the 1800s as a result of coal and iron ore mining. The Conservatory Tower, a remnant of a past property, was easily worked into Arthur's plans for his home. Following the collapse of the Four Seasons Hotel and the development of LMU, Craig Neuk became the university's music conservatory. The Conservatory Tower became a part of regional news during the "Cyclone of 1933." What follows was a newspaper clipping of that event and a description of the damage done to the campus on March 14, 1933: <blockquote>Next to the demolished condition of Pruden, Tennessee, the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, at Harrogate, is the most tragic in appearance. The beutiful tress and shrubbery which as been the pride of the institution are a twisted mass of broken tops, many of the trees uprooted, and in spots, all the trees are gone. The physical damage of the buildings on the campus is estimated at $25,000 at least. Most of this is in the roofs which have been blown off or damaged. The grand stand, a gift of Gov. Myers Y. Cooper, of Ohio, was completely demolished, being scattered all over the athletic field. A building nearby, known as "The Barracks" was a complete wreck. This building was occupied by three people at the time but they miraculously escaped. The poultry buildings on the farm were all demolished. The roofs of Duke Hall, the Faculty House, the LaFrentz Poole Hall, and the Conservatory were badly damaged. The storm occurred about the time the students were eating supper, an in spite of falling trees and the scattering of timbers from the smaller buildings which were destroyed, not a single injury was received by anyone, except one student, "Red" Self who received a small cut on the back of his hand. A garage in which the car of Mrs. Bessie Huntzinger was housed was blown away, but the building was left standing. A large elm tree fell across another garage in which there were two cars, and these were damaged considerably. Fully one-third of the trees of the campus are all down or ruined. The trees and shrubbery which grew in so much abundance in the Conservatory ground are practically all down, leaving the Conservatory building almost ghostly in its loneliness in the wreckage. Apparently the center path of the storm struck the University proper, laying waste the trees and taking off the roofs. Fully half of the trees in the main quadrangle of the University are down. The top of the Stone Tower at the Conservatory, and the top of the Reservoir on Grant-Lee Hill were blown off. A cow shed was blown down, but not a single cow was injured. One was trapped, and could not get out. Nearly all of the buildings suffered broken windows, in some cases, the entire frames being blown out. Students today were busy cutting up the wreckage. Faculty members and students, numbering about four hundred people, are devoting themselves with sickened hearts to clearing up the wreckage and putting the campus in order.</blockquote>

The Conservatory Tower is the oldest structure on campus. Pre-dating the university, it was incorporated into Alexander Arthur's home, Craig Neuk. It's rooftop was taken off during the Cyclone of 1933.

The Conservatory Tower

Built to meet the needs of the university as it grew, Byram Hall was initially served faculty and married students. This was particularly advantageous following the WWII years.&nbsp;Originally housing four apartments with two to three rooms each, today it is divided into multiple rooms for students.&nbsp; Previously, Byram Hall sat adjacent to McClelland Hall, which was also used for faculty and student house, and even a daycare. Today, McClelland Hall no longer stands.

Byram Hall has variously served as both faculty and student housing.  Byram Hall it is currently the home of the Deltas.
