The house at 415 Pipe Stave Hollow Road in Miller Place is the Samuel Hopkins House, on a bluff near Mount Sinai Harbor. The main part of the wood frame house is two-story, built in 1770 in the Georgian style . Attached to the east side is an even older house, one-and-a-half story, dating to about 1720, formerly owned by the Robinson family and purchased by Samuel Hopkins in 1858. Both portions of the house were remodeled in 1816 in the Federal style and received new windows and entrances. The Samuel Hopkins House was listed in the New York and National Registers of Historic Places in 2009. Three outbuildings contribute to the historical significance: a barn, smokehouse, and outhouse. The greenhouse, in-ground pool, and former dairy/current pool house on the roughly 2-acre tract are modern or too altered to be included.
The house at 172 Hallock Landing Road, to the west of the fork in the road with Culross Drive, is the Noah Hallock Homestead. Acquired by the Rocky Point Historical Society in 2015, the house was owned by eight generations of the Hallock family, pioneer settlers of Rocky Point. Noah Hallock built the house in 1721 for his bride, Bethia Youngs. The Noah Hallock House is Rocky Point's oldest standing house and was listed in the New York and National Registers in 2013. Also on the property are historic outbuildings: a well house, chicken coop, and privy. The historical society operates a museum in the house and also offers tours of the garden. Hallock descendants still live nearby on portions carved out of the once-larger property.
A building located here on Long Island has the distinction of being the last extant research facility of famed physicist Nikola Tesla. It was here that Tesla hoped to transmit electrical signals across the Atlantic through a tower that Tesla designed in 1901. Tesla’s dream did not materialize, and in 1917, the curiously-shaped tower was demolished and sold for scrap. While the tower was dismantled the building, which was designed by acclaimed (and scandalous) architect Stanford White, remains. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. The site is currently undergoing an extensive cleanup in preparation for the opening of a museum dedicated to Tesla and the early history of scientific experiments with electricity.
The wood frame house at 126 Sound Road in Wading River, on the east side of the road, is the Benjamin King Woodhull House. The oldest portion of the house was constructed around 1750, possibly by Josiah Woodhull Jr. (1733-1787). The original part of the house - a post and beam building about 20 feet square - was enlarged in the nineteenth century to one-and-a-half stories and has become a south extension of the two-story, Greek Revival style main block dating to the ca. 1840s. The house, also known as Four Chimneys, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 as an example of changing architectural styles in vernacular farmhouses from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries in north-central Long Island. The house and a privy are part of the nomination on a lot of almost six acres; a barn, garage, guest house, kennel, and well head are not.
The Tuthill-Lapham House, also known as Friendly Hall, was built for Bartley Fanning Tuthill. The original portion of the Wading River home dates to around 1820 and includes the three-story, Federal-style section with a gambrel roof. The home also includes additions that were built in 1838 and 1869, as well as a kitchen wing added in the 1920s. Part of the house was briefly used as a school for local children and the large Tuthill family in the nineteenth century, taught by Mrs. Tuthill. During the late nineteenth century, the house became a boarding house, catering to summer tourists. The Tuthill-Lapham House was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 as an example of early settlement patterns and early vernacular Long Island residences.
The farm property on the north side of Sound Avenue east of Herricks Lane contains the Hallock Homestead and has become the Hallockville Farm Museum. The property was part of a larger parcel of 525 acres that almost became the site of four nuclear power plants under the new owner in 1973, Long Island Light and Power Company (LILCO). After years of opposition from locals and Governor Carey, the project was denied in January 1980. LILCO had leased the Caleb Hallock barn and other outbuildings to the newly-formed Hallockville, Inc. in 1977 for ten years. LILCO donated the Caleb Hallock farmhouse and outbuildings and 2.5 acres to Hallockville Inc. in 1981; the farmstead was listed in the National Register in 1984. Hallockville, Inc. restored the farmhouse and outbuildings to create an historical working farm museum that is still operating.
