Description

The “Gilded Age” term is derived from the literary works of Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, who wrote satirically about this era which they felt masked serious social problems with a thin gold gilding. During this period in the late 19th century from 1870s-1900, there was rapid industrialization and large waves of immigration causing both extreme wealth and abject poverty. It was also the age of the railroad which helped to fuel commerce and the growth of cities. The numerous religious denominations were growing in membership with the Catholicism becoming the largest. The Westchester Gilded Age tour includes of variety of buildings that reflect this age of expansion.
