Exploring Kodiak's History
This tour is an introduction to the unique and diverse history of Kodiak, Alaska. Kodiak was originally inhabited by Alutiiq Native Americans for over 7,000 years. The city was settled in the 18th century by Russia. For over 150 years, harvesting of the area's sea otter pelts led to the near extinction of the animal, and wars with and enslavement of the native people. After Alaska was purchased by the United States in 1867, Kodiak became a commercial fishing center. This continues to be central to the economy of the community.
