In 2018, Creative Neighborhoods was launched to support public art in all of Boulder’s unique neighborhoods, diversify the types of artwork found in the city and to provide opportunities to regional artists. The first program of Creative Neighborhoods was a series of mural commissions on residential properties, visible from public paths and streets, throughout Boulder. Murals are widely recognized tools to convey the pulse of community. In Boulder, these residential murals provide an opportunity to collectively promote the unique personalities of the city.
Using a first come, first served selection process, mural sites on residential property were identified throughout all of Boulder’s nine subcommunities. Selected homeowners worked with the Office of Arts and Culture to partner with regional artists from the City-approved mural artist roster. Funding for the Creative Neighborhoods: Murals was made available through the Community Culture and Safety Tax.
