St. George was established in 1861 by leaders of the Mormon Church--an outpost settlement south of Salt Lake that might have been abandoned if it were not for the continual investment of Brigham Young and Salt Lake leaders. 13 years later, an aging Brigham Young decided to spend his winters in the warmer southern climate of St. George. He lived in the home of George Chesney in the 1870s, and today, visitors can tour that home and learn of its unique history.
